I'm posting snippets from a story this year for the Challenge.
You can enjoy the bits on their own, but if you'd like to read the whole tale, please start with A.
E IS FOR EMAIL
No.
Absolutely not. Fenn protested. Your job is to help children.
Not set up dates for yourself with their parents.
“Oh come
on. I am helping Libby.” She tapped the return key and put her name
at the bottom of the email. “I always put the children first and
you know it. Look at me. I'm a school counselor making a crappy
salary. Half the time, I'm just a glorified file clerk. I stay out at
night killing monsters. I haven't had a date in over a year. That's
whole loads of pathetic. Oh, and yeah, the majority of my time is
spent talking with a tiny dog.”
I'm your
guide. The vessel I'm in shouldn't matter. Fenn sniffed. Also,
your job is ideal for one of the Fearless. We discussed your career
when you were—
“Yeah,
yeah. Perfect for me. So much better than being a stunt woman like I
wanted.” Danielle sighed, glanced around her small office, and then
hit send. “It's time I made my life a bit more exciting.”
Ah..so Fenn is a dog! Interesting :)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like her life is going to become exciting.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great set-up. Hitting send sounds like it's the starting point for all kinds of excitement!
ReplyDeleteWell, technically she does her own stunts, so she's a stunt woman, right?

Just caught up with the snippets I missed and am loving this story more and more! It's sad to see that Danielle had to give up the career path she really wanted. And uh-oh, wishing for a more exciting life? I'm sure that'll go well, haha. Can't wait for day F!
ReplyDeleteI was hoping Danielle was going to get in touch with Libby's dad, I had a feeling she liked him. Plus, it might help her solve the mystery of what's causing the monsters, if he's having bad dreams too. Go easy on her Fenn, girl deserves a date.
ReplyDeleteI've just had a very weird thought about the Fearless and their guides - I will have to email you about it.
The majority of my time is spent talking to a rather large dog. =)
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, I think her life just might get a little more exciting before the month's out.
Love the character voice here. Great snippet.
ReplyDeleteFinally a clue about Fenn!
ReplyDeleteI had been wondering about Fenn!
ReplyDeletei hope the date will come ;)
ReplyDeletehmm. I'm liking that Fenn is a dog! Intriguing.
ReplyDeleteSimply Sarah
Really great voice here Christine. And I think it's about time I made my life more exciting too. LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to picture Fenn. A small dog . . . statue? What kind of dog? How small a figurine?
ReplyDeleteA tiny snippet that grabs me hook line and sinker.
ReplyDeleteWhat?? Killing monsters isn't exciting enough?
ReplyDeleteExcited to read what happens next. :)
Woo hoo! More exciting!
ReplyDeleteHeather
Thank you, everyone! I'm happy that some think Danielle deserves a night out. Poor girl needs some action other than monster action!
ReplyDeleteAnd for those of you who have asked, Fenn is the Scotty dog game piece from Monopoly. Danielle had him made into a charm to wear on a bracelet. You'll learn about the Monopoly thing when we hit M. :)
So, that's what Fenn is! I was trying to picture Fenn alongside Danielle and couldn't come up with much. :P
ReplyDeleteHi, friend. So glad I've found another blogger who is writing a serialized story for the challenge. I did so last year as well. Best regards to you. Ruby.
ReplyDeleteAh! I arrived to a discovery. Fenn is a tiny dog. I thought some kind of gnome or spirit. Cool.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what Fenn would turn out to be... I thought maybe an ostrich. :)
ReplyDeleteWe were on the same wavelength for E.
Love that Fenn is a dog! And I'm curious to see what kind of excitement this email will lead to. :)
ReplyDeleteHa! Yes, the vessel you're in does matter. *snarf* That's hilarious. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Christine and Fenn,
ReplyDeletePenny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar should do a collaboration with Fenn. A famous 'pawblisher' don't you know.
What a fun post and very clever.
Penny's human,
Gary :)
I also pictured the little Scotty dog from Monopoly after seeing the pic! Hey, it's not often I'm on the money. :)
ReplyDeleteI love that you made the challenge a continuing story! What a great idea!

LOL - I love this segment of the story.
ReplyDeleteThanks for checking out my AtoZ.
