Saturday Six for September 22nd

1. I received my first bad review on Amazon this week. I wallowed in my misery for a day, imagined myself eating a dozen cakes, and then started writing my next novella the next day.

2. My monthly writer's group meets today. A bunch of very short stories this time, but good ones. My own is a fantasy flash piece done backwards. I wasn't attempting to be artsy or anything. It's just that the beginning was the most climatic part, so I put it at the end.

3. My mom will be arriving on Tuesday this coming week and visiting for four days. She'll spoil my son and feed me cake. I'll be absent from the cyber world during those days, but at least you'll know I'll be stuffed to the gills with yummy sweets.

4. I finally got to watch Cabin in the Woods. It was amazing! I haven't loved a movie like that in a long time. I'd already read spoilers, so I wasn't surprised, but it didn't ruin my enjoyment of it. Joss Whedon is brilliant.

5. My new TV show this week was Revolution. I don't know. Interesting and yet it hasn't hooked me yet. I don't like the younger actors. Where does everyone find new and fashionable clothes in this world?! I'll keep watching, but it didn't suck me in like LOST did.

6. Thursday was picture day at my son's preschool. They were in need of a volunteer to help the photographer, so I offered a helping hand. It turned out to be a chaotic morning. My son's teacher was sick and so the regular routine was thrown to the winds. This immediately led the boy to a bad, bad mood which he refused to shake. I was the photographer's gopher, fetching kids and classes to come down for their photos, and I was also a substitute teacher with the boy clinging to my leg the entire time. The boy didn't smile for his pictures. He scowled. Do you remember those preschool stress dreams I had before the school year started? They came true.

Here's hoping the weekend is good for all of us!

  1. Sorry about the bad review, but I think you handled it perfectly. Deal with the sadness and move right into writing again. I hope the new novella is going well for you!

    1. Thank you! It's going good so far. The heroine has a real bite to her personality, so she's fun to write.

  2. Sorry about the bad review, although it sounds like you handled it graciously.

Have fun at your writers group, and good luck with the flashfiction pieces.

I hope you and your family have a nice time when your mum visits, and yay for sugary treats.

Cabin in the Woods seems intriguing, I might see if Hubby and I can watch it over the weekend.

I hadn't heard of Revolution before you post, but as it's post-apocalyptic and dystopian, and produced by J.J. Abrams, I think I might check it out.

Oh my goodness, your son's school picture day sounds chaotic! I've had a few sulky school pictures of my boys over the years too!

  3. The more people who read your book, the more chance for a bad review. Get excited - means you're reaching a lot of people now!
Cabin in the Woods was awesome!!! Bat-shit crazy is the only way to describe the last twenty minutes.
Watched the first episode of Revolution online and wasn't impressed either.

    1. Yay! Thanks for the pep talk. I was hoping more from Revolution. I hope they step it up a notch or I might not make it watching through the next few weeks.

  4. As a teacher, I hate Picture day. High School kids love it because it is so disruptive.
I want to see Cabin in the Woods.

    1. I can totally understand why you don't like it. It was crazy! And the little ones hate having their routine disturbed.

  5. I got my first bad review last week, so I know how you feel. It's not fun. But you can only remind yourself not everyone will love your work, then pick up and move on. Sounds like you did just that, so good for you!

  6. It is only an opinion and as long as you love what you do then it is A+ for you!!! For each feeling of defeat is many more victories. I do love the fact that you just started writing again!!! You are an inspiration!!! :)

  7. I wouldn't sweat the bad review. They happen to everybody! And some people just enjoy writing something negative. At least you'll have that cake soon!

    1. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will get better. But I'm not going to complain too much. If I don't like it, I just gain an hour to write out of my week!
