Review for Precipice (The Backworlds #6)

Blurb:
In the far future, humanity settles the stars, bioengineering its descendants to survive in a harsh universe. This is the sixth book in the science fiction series, The Backworlds. A space opera adventure.

The Backworlds hang by a Quantum string, a thread about to snap. Annihilation is coming if Craze can’t stop it.

The genocidal alien he had trapped breaks free, destroying a ship belonging to the Backworlds’ oldest enemy, the Fo’wo’s. The murderous alien wants to overtake the galaxy. The Fo’wo’s want another war.

The Backworlds’ best chance to survive is to overcome a century of hate and forge an alliance with the Fo’wo’s. Because of his history with the alien, Craze is recruited to represent his people. Now he’s the most hated man in the galaxy.

The looming war will be a holocaust unless Craze can stop it, knowing salvation comes at a price.

My review:
A war hangs over Craze's head. A fearsome alien is poised to destroy the Backworlds and worlds beyond it. Yet the only hope for victory is for Craze to forge an alliance with the Fo'wo's. He doesn't know who he loathes more: them or the alien. His own people hate him for attempting an alliance and his friends are getting backlash from it. Can Craze bury his hatred to ally with the Fo'wo's or will their mutual enmity ensure their decimation?

This is the sixth awesome book in the space opera series The Backworlds and my favorite so far. I was hooked from the start, drawn tight with the tension, and holding my breath with the suspense. Excellent writing with superb characterization and plotting. I love it that I'm so easily transported into the far future, into the Backworlds, filled with wonderfully strange beings who all sprang from human beings.

Each of the characters we have grown with are faced with immensely difficult choices. My favorites are Rainly and Craze. Such different paths and yet admirable in their loyalty. Their struggles pulled at my heartstrings.

I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Beware the Vortex
Evil is afoot. Chronos has accidentally created a vortex while cleaning his hourglass, plunging a few unfortunate souls into Lucien’s Bar, gateway to the Underworld. Now they are trapped. Lucien wants to keep them but will give each hapless victim one chance to earn their freedom. His condition? Enter a contest of skills with an Immortal opponent of his/her choosing.

Do you think you can survive a swordfight with War? How about wend your way through a carnivorous garden to get to Gaia’s treehouse? Or weave a portion of the Great Tapestry of Life while avoiding Atropos’ giant pair of life-ending scissors? Perhaps you’re brave enough to challenge Death to a peanut-eating contest? Or whip up a batch of punch with Jezebel, the Master Poisoner? Do you have what it takes to win your way out of Lucien’s grasp?

Your mission: on the day you appear in the contest, you will post on your own blog, or gather together your Facebook and/or Twitter friends and provide a link to this blog, pleading (begging works too) with your loyal supporters to come to your aid at http://riverfairchild.blogspot.com/ , and cheer you on to victory. Their comments will decide your fate. River will provide you with a few magic words to bolster the power of your minions. Plead well, for you will need their strength to endure. Others might seek to cast their votes with the Immortals.

Rewards? Yes! Besides winning your freedom (hopefully), each volunteer (that would be you) who is locked in the struggle will receive an Amazon or Barnes & Noble gift card. In addition, a few lucky commenters will be picked at random to receive a gift card at the end of the Faire. Four brave people have signed up so far. River needs one more to fill the week.

About M. Pax:
Fantasy, science fiction, and the weird beckons to her, and she blames Oregon, a source of endless inspiration. She docents at Pine Mountain Observatory in the summers, and one of her cats has a crush on Mr. Spock. You can find out more by visiting her website: mpaxauthor.com

Excerpt:
Until he knew for certain whether he dealt with one genocidal alien or two, Lepsi couldn’t think right. His thoughts refused to stand still, stuttering and churning.
The hatch slid fully open. He sprang off the cargo ejector, sailing two kilometers into the ether. He tumbled in the black for precisely twenty-three seconds then engaged his thrusters to journey the remaining twenty kilometers over to a spacecraft-sized mass of debris. The bits clumped together forming a weird metallic planetoid.
He traced along the char marks and the mangled pieces of hull. The answers he needed wouldn’t be found in this trash, yet he was closer to them here than anywhere else, unless he joined up with the horrid alien again. His limbs shuddered and his lungs struggled for breath. He never wanted to see the cloud-like ship again. He couldn’t. He’d crack into a billion unrecoverable pieces. Just like the rubble of the Fo’wo ship around him.

Review for The Initiate

Blurb:
A junction erupts between the worlds in Settler, Oregon, a rift from which horrors attack our world. The Rifters defend us.

To trust unquestioningly is the first lesson Daelin Long must learn as the newest Initiate of the Rifters. Her first day is a disaster. She stands on a deserted street in a town smaller than a city district, courting killer rocks from another world with her ancestor from the Revolutionary War. Normal no longer exists.

While she struggles, Earl Blacke grapples with atoning for his past ill deeds, running far and fast from Settler, Oregon. The Shaman of the Desert promises him redemption, and an old mine puts the possibility of a gold strike in his grasp. His luck has changed for the better, but he can’t have both.

You're never a hero until you are.

My review:
The small Oregon town of Settler is more than just a pretty view. This is where a rift between worlds opens and lets the monsters travel through. Only a small, brave band called the Rifters protect Earth from it. Daelin Long is the newest Initiate. After everything that's happened to her in NYC and the disappearance of her sister, she doesn't trust anyone. But that is exactly what she must do to rise in the ranks. Earl Blacke remains a mystery to Daelin, and she believes he holds the answers she needs. Yet Earl struggles with his past sins while their enemies in the rift plot far worse things for Earth.

This is the second book in the Rifters series, and it's even better than the first. We still have our small western town and quirky townsfolk. They have no idea what's looming over their heads, and it just makes it that much more entertaining. I love that Settler is in the midst of its annual festival, Swit Days, when this story takes place. Settler's personality rings as loudly as all the other characters in the book.

I'm still a big Daelin fan. She's unlike your typical heroine, and paired along side the Rifters, they make the Scooby gang look dry and suburbian. Daelin is challenged even further in this book, not just with her sister's disappearance, but her own inner demons as she tries to learn to trust again. Earl's journey to come to terms with his past is a fun, bumpy ride. One of my new favorites that we're introduced to is Silas. A brilliant and fascinating mind on that man.

One of the aspects that stands out in this book is the enemy currently threatening Settler's population. And threatening seems like too mild of a word for it! I'll never look at red stones the same way again.

This is my favorite book by M. Pax so far. I'm hungry for more!
