The Remnant Blog Tour - review and giveaway

Blurb:
One nation, without God...

Colton Pierce apprehends Abberants—those who display symptoms of faith—and quarantines them on a remote island to ensure public safety.  Years prior, the government released a genetically-engineered super flu that destroyed the genes believed to be the biological source of spiritual experience in an effort to rid the world of terrorism. As an extractor with the Center for Theological Control, Colton is dedicated to the cause, his only distraction a new CTC employee, Selma.

But Colton's steadfast commitment is challenged when he learns his own son has been targeted for extraction. An underground militia, the Remnant, contacts him, and he discovers the purpose of Selma’s interest. The Remnant agrees to help Colton save his son in exchange for his assistance with their plan to free the Aberrants on the island.

Colton is faced with the most important decision of his life. Does he remain faithful to the CTC? Or trust Selma and the Remnant and give up everything to save his son?

My review:
Colton Pierce is the top extractor with the Center for Theological Control (CTC), and he's determined to be the next director when his boss retires. The problem is he's arrogant and has no people skills. Skills he needs most when dealing with his son. Distracted by a beautiful new CTC employee, Selma, he is surprised when he discovers his son is on the list for extraction. Colton will do anything to protect his only child, even work with an underground militia group called the Remnant. With them, they may be able to free not only his son but all the Abberants in quarantine before they are put to death. Yet is the CTC lying to him or the Remnant? Who should he put his faith in?

An incredibly well-written tale of speculative fiction. It is interesting to ponder what the leaders of the world would do to rid it of war. In this book, they created a virus that destroyed genes that they believed were linked to spirituality. Anyone displaying behavior linked to religion is tagged, watched, and, if found guilty, extracted from society and forced to lived in exile on an island. A harsh punishment which some folks don't think is enough. They believe those Abberants need to be exterminated. A grim future.

At the beginning, I wasn't a fan of Colton. He had an inflated ego and a lack of consideration of others. But then there was his son Marty. His love for the boy, however misguided, put a crack in that extractor armor of his. And as the story progressed, more and more cracks appeared. Colton wasn't the man he presented to the world. This was amazing characterization of not only Colton, but all the cast of characters. Selma was one of my favorites. Brave and a little bit of a mystery, she's a woman to admire.

The plot takes us on several twists, and I wasn't certain who to trust. I wasn't even sure of the implants in their heads! Great suspense and action.

My gift to you - Team Santa

TEAM SANTA
By Christine Rains

"Team CA-23 is a go!”

The fat man wiggled and slithered down the chimney as if boneless. He popped out of the fireplace with a merry laugh. A puff of soot surrounded him and transformed to sparkling dust as it drifted to the floor.

Bobbo the cat started out of his nap and hissed. His gray fur stood on end and his claws dug into the couch cushion. He raced behind the sofa in a flurry of hairballs.

From the sleigh on the roof, an elf in a green cap flipped a switch for the camera. “CA-23 entry successful.”

The radio response was crisp as the new fallen snow. “Roger that, CA-23. How's he looking, Evert?”

Doing good. No chimney damage. He's placing the presents under the tree right now.” Evert leaned back, breathing in the cold night air. The images on the screen bobbed as Santa bent and set the many gifts out for the large family of six. “I think we got this one right.”

"Let's hope. Finn's still trying to repair the roof from CA-22's mishap.”

The mishap was letting Finn pilot anything.” Evert snorted. “But since his father has more stripes on his cane than the rest of us, he gets to do what he wants.”

Santa nabbed a sugar cookie from a plate and stuffed it in his mouth. He hummed and chewed as he started on the stockings. His beard caught the crumbs and sifted them out to appear on the empty plate.

"At least he made Finn do the repairs himself. Maybe he won't ask for his own team next year.”

Evert chuckled. “Yeah, let him stick with cleaning up after the reindeer.”

As if he'd heard the joke, Santa's belly jiggled as he giggled and packed the treats into the last stocking. He then continued to stick stuffers into a nearby vase and potpourii dish.

"Crap.” Evert straightened and pressed a few buttons on the dashboard. With no response from Santa, he tried another set. “Hugo, we have a stuffing problem.”

Santa moved on to the chair, ripping open a pillow and filling it with gifts.

"Dammit.” Hugo let loose a colorful string of curses. “What's he doing?”

"Just stuffed some pillows. Moving on to a potted plant.” Evert's fingers danced over the controls.

Dirt and leaves splatted against the wallpaper.

"Have you tried telling him his job is complete? Or the adult out-of-sight escape command?”

"Both. He's not responding to either. It keeps saying his work is in progress.” Evert growled and hit a fist on the screen. “Come on, Santa. You're done!”

Santa bent and reached down to pick up something.

"The cat! He's going to stuff the cat!” Evert sent the commands again as Hugo frantically yelled over the radio.

Bobbo screeched and kicked, but the gloved hand had a firm hold of him. The other hand raised up, full of peppermints and chocolates wrapped in shiny red paper.

Evert slapped his hand on a large red button. The gleam in Santa's eyes blinked out, and he fell backward on the coffee table. The cat tore free and raced out of the room.

"Situation averted.” Evert groaned and rested his head against the screen. “CA-23 has been shut down.”

"Roger that.” Hugo sighed. “Clean up. A replacement is already on his way.”

A cold wind kicked up the snow and sent it spiraling upwards. The reindeer stomped impatiently. Evert could sympathize. When Santa had been alive, it had never been like this. Deliveries were made quickly and efficiently. No good child was ever forgotten.

"What make? Please tell me it's one of the Mistletoe line. At least the only bug they've exhibited is kissing too many surprised mothers.”

"Nope, the closet available is one of the Snowman clones.” Hugo replied, the apology clear in his tone.

"Great.” Evert grumbled and slid out of his comfortable seat. “He better finish our route before he melts. Team CA-23 leaving the sleigh for clean-up.”

Friday Five for October 30, 2015

1. Big excitement this week as Mayhem in the Air is now available. It's a marvelous collection of short stories from the talented authors of Untethered Realms. My horror sci-fi, "The Silent Wind" is included in the anthology. Next week, we'll start a two week tour with exclusive excerpts and a giveaway where you could win a $40 gift card! The collection is only 99 cents. A steal with all the awesome stories in it!

2. Oh, more fantastic short stories! I received word yesterday that 9Tales Told in the Dark #7 is available for pre-order and will be released November 23rd. My horror story, "All I Want For Christmas" is one of the nine scary tales. This makes up for the rejection I received earlier this week.

3. I've had a good writing week even with my son having a couple of early dismissal days from school. I finished the first novella in a new series for my publisher. The series is called The Sasquatch Susies. I'll leave it to your imagination what that's about for now.

4. My mom will be visiting next week. We do all our Christmas shopping, so we don't have to freak out at the last minute. It's nice to have it all done before December, but it's difficult to find places to store gifts in our little house! Not just store them, but keep them out of sight of my little guy.

5. One day until Halloween! I love this time of year. We had a fun time last weekend at the Trick or Treat Trail, and we went trick or treating at the university on Wednesday. Tomorrow I get to see all the costumes as the kids come to our door. My little guy, er, puppy is super excited.

(My son and his buddy at the Trick or Treat Trail.)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

A Change of Mind blog tour - character interview

I'm excited to welcome today the fantastic Nick Wilford and celebrate the release of his new collection, A Change of Mind and Other Stories. I've already had the privilege of reading his book and loved it. Here's my 5 star review.

And here's another reason to celebrate. For today only, Nick's awesome collection is only 99 cents!

Thanks for hosting me, Christine! Today, the MC of A Change of Mind, Reuben, is making a high-profile TV appearance on a show that aims to recognise underrated office workers. I’ll now hand you over to the host, William Fangleman.

Fangleman: Well, good evening, ladies and gentlemen and welcome to another edition of “Unsung Office Heroes of the Land” with me, William Fangleman. Today I’m pleased to be joined by Reuben Timsbury, a hardworking systems analyst with Harbinger Industries. Hello there, Reuben. I’m pleased to meet you.

Reuben: No one’s ever pleased to meet me.

Fangleman: Oh come now, I’m sure that’s not true. You seem like a very interesting chap. Why don’t you start by telling the audience a bit about yourself?

Reuben: What’s to tell? I work at a big office – you know, Corporate Central, fat cat boss – writing mind-numbing reports. I’m good at my job, not that I ever get recognition for it.

Fangleman: Well, let’s have a bit of recognition now. How about a big hand for Reuben and his report-writing skills!

(Audience goes wild)

Reuben: (goes bright red) Errr, thanks. I’m not used to being applauded. It was weird, but nice, I guess.

Fangleman: Now, what sort of people do you work alongside in this office? Do you get along well with them?

Reuben: (grimaces) Are you joking? They delight in making my life a living hell. This one big oaf, Borderman – he asks to borrow my stapler every day. And every day I never get it back, and I have to buy a new one. At £4.99 a day, that’s quite a big wodge out of my paycheque.

Fangleman: Well, why don’t you just stop giving him staplers?

Reuben: Hmm... you know, that’s never occurred to me. When you’ve been pushed around by people your whole life, you do as you’re told. Second nature, I guess. And who’s to say what he could do to me with those staplers?

Fangleman: They’re pretty lethal weapons, I’ve heard. Now, just so our audience aren’t left in total doom and gloom... is there anyone at all you like in our office? Someone who could brighten your day just a tad?

Reuben: (shuffles feet) Weeelll... There’s Minerva, from accounts. She doesn’t even work on this floor, so I don’t see her that often. But she’s a radiant vision, a Greek goddess in name and in how she moves. But what are the chances of her noticing a schmuck like me? She doesn’t even know who I am.

Fangleman: Oh, don’t do yourself down. You’re a handsome chap, it sounds like you just need a dose of confidence. Well, that’s all we have time for on “Unsung Office Heroes of the Land”. Another big hand for Reuben Timsbury, folks!

(Applause) Reuben grins sheepishly while staring at the floor.

In A Change of Mind, Reuben is an office worker so meek and mild he puts up with daily bullying from his boorish male colleagues as if it’s just a normal part of his day. But when a stranger points him in the direction of a surgeon offering a revolutionary new procedure, he can’t pass up the chance to turn his life around.

But this isn’t your average surgeon. For a start, he operates alone in a small room above a mechanic’s. And he promises to alter his patients’ personality so they can be anything they want to be…

In Marissa, a man who is determined to find evidence of his girlfriend’s infidelity ends up wondering if he should have left well alone.

Precipice is here!

Fantasy, science fiction, and the weird beckons to her, and she blames Oregon, a source of endless inspiration. She docents at Pine Mountain Observatory in the summers, and one of her cats has a crush on Mr. Spock. You can find out more by visiting her website: mpaxauthor.com

Excerpt:
Until he knew for certain whether he dealt with one genocidal alien or two, Lepsi couldn’t think right. His thoughts refused to stand still, stuttering and churning.
The hatch slid fully open. He sprang off the cargo ejector, sailing two kilometers into the ether. He tumbled in the black for precisely twenty-three seconds then engaged his thrusters to journey the remaining twenty kilometers over to a spacecraft-sized mass of debris. The bits clumped together forming a weird metallic planetoid.
He traced along the char marks and the mangled pieces of hull. The answers he needed wouldn’t be found in this trash, yet he was closer to them here than anywhere else, unless he joined up with the horrid alien again. His limbs shuddered and his lungs struggled for breath. He never wanted to see the cloud-like ship again. He couldn’t. He’d crack into a billion unrecoverable pieces. Just like the rubble of the Fo’wo ship around him.

This World Bites Blog Tour - Review and the next stop on the Geeky Dice & Debauchery Tour

Blurb:
It's her first day on a new world and Cera's already found trouble. Michael, her guardian, has been bitten by a zombie and will soon join the undead ranks.

Everyone tells her there's no cure, but Cera isn't one to be deterred. She's willing to face off with zombie hordes, demon slavers, and black market informants if it means she'll find a cure for Michael. But she's not the only one hunting for something.

Something is hunting her.

My review:
Cera and her strange crew are searching for a cure for her comatose father. They've had their share of troubles, but none like that which faces them now on this new planet. Cera's guardian is bitten by a zombie, and as she searches for a way to save him, something is trying to capture her. Good thing she's a powerful elemental. Wait. Her powers don't work against demons? Oh oh.

What a wonderfully quirky and fun speculative fiction tale. It's over the top and it works so well. The reader is thrust right in to the story, joining a cast of odd characters with a colorful history. It's a new world with zombies and other supernaturals. It paints a fantastic urban fantasy-like setting where even the zombies have restaurants they can go to eat.

The plot is twisted with surprises ready to jump out at you, but for me, it's the characters that shine brightest. Cera has a powerful young voice, but she's been around for a while. She's a strong leader and I admire her dedication to her friends and purpose. I just want to pinch Michael's cute dimpled cheeks and hug him, but I suppose he'd like that a little too much. I'm also a big fan of Duke, a sexy vampire that owns a vegan restaurant. Each character has a rich history and will make you laugh. I laughed a lot while reading this book!

This World Bites is zany and unusual. Be prepared for a wild ride when you read it. And read it you must! I highly recommend it. Good thing this is the first in the series. That means there's more coming!
