The crunch of the shovel pounding into the snow and ice filled his ears. It was all he could hear. The rest of the street was silent beneath its wintry blanket. Breathing was difficult with the icy air clogging his lungs. His nose burned. His throat was dry and on fire. But he ignored it, focusing on his task.

Crack, crack, crack.

He jabbed the shovel into a hunk of snow. On the third hit, it shattered into several pieces. He scooped them up and flung them to the side. He surveyed what remained. There was one big ball in the middle of the path that needed to be dealt with next. He moved over to it and struck it. That one impact had it severing in two. He was about to hit it again when something crashed into the back of his head.

Explosions of white light danced over his vision. Pain enveloped his skull. The shovel slipped from his fingers. Blackness cloaked his mind, coaxing him into its depths.

Beth. Her name was a whisper in his head, as if his thoughts were being sucked into a wormhole.

His legs collapsed under his weight.

Cold. It seeped into him, consuming him. And then his consciousness fled down that same void that ate his thoughts.

January optional IWSG question: What steps have you taken or plan to take to put a schedule in place for your writing and publishing?

It depends on how you define schedule. I have a loose schedule for what I want to do this year. I don't want to put any more stress on myself than I already do, so I haven't set deadlines for the two novels I want to release in 2018. I will make them the best darn novels they can be, and if that happens later rather than sooner, so be it. I'm trying to be okay with that.

Tsunami Crimes Blog Tour and Giveaway

Christine’s Question for Chrys: What was the most challenging part of writing Tsunami Crimes?

You expect me to say the tsunami, right? In which case, you’d be…wrong. If your second guess is what happens to Beth after she’s taken prisoner by criminals, you’d be…wrong again.

The tsunami came so easily to me. I actually skipped Beth and Donovan’s honeymoon and touristy scenes to dive right into the tsunami. I don’t know if it was easy because of all the research I did, my excitement, the nightmares I’ve had of tsunamis, or my fear of drowning, but every part of it came to me without any effort. Even the chapters after the tsunami were a snap for me to write.

I used a lot of my own fears and experiences throughout Tsunami Crimes. I depict my near-drowning incident when a wave stretched clear over my head and crashed me into large rocks. I held onto those rocks for dear life as the water tried to suck me back. If I hadn’t, it would’ve taken me. That very moment is in

Tsunami Crimes. Even hallucinations I’ve experienced, and memories from when I had spine surgery at fifteen, made it into this book.

Now you’re probably asking, So? What was the most challenging part?

Do you recall how I said I skipped Beth and Donovan’s honeymoon and touristy scenes? Yup. Those were the most difficult parts for me to write because I had to go back, after reaching THE END, to fill in those chapters. I skipped them to get to the excitement, and then I had trouble getting in the mood for them after writing all of that excitement. But I did it, and I actually enjoy those scenes now. My characters deserve the happiness they experience in those moments. It was the least I could do…before unleashing Mother Nature on them. Again.

Character Interview with Beth Kennedy

1. In the beginning of Seismic Crimes, Donovan is dragged into an interrogation room as a suspected murderer. What went through your head?

A million and one things, but on the top was worry over whether he’d be arrested for murder and if I’d be charged as an accomplice, or worse, for what I did to help him. But I’d do it over again. All of it.

Chrys: Even venturing into hurricane weather to help him after his car crash?

Beth: Absolutely. I’d endure that danger and the injuries I sustained again. For him.

2. You didn’t know Donovan well when you fell in love with him. What was the most surprising thing you learned about him?

That he surfs! I love to be active and on the water. I’m a Florida girl with salt water in my veins, so I hope he’ll teach me to surf one day.

3. You get to spend the holidays with Donovan for the first time, but we don’t get to read about your New Year’s Eve celebration. What did the two of you do?

We had just returned home from Christmas in Michigan, so we didn’t feel up to going out. We stayed in, had shrimp cocktail and beer, watched the ball drop on the television, and shared a kiss at midnight, which . . . um . . . led to more . . . in the bedroom.

*Donovan walks in* And it was truly memorable.

Beth: Get out. This is my interview with Chrys. You already had your turn.

Donovan: Yes, I did. *winks*

Beth: *glares* Did he flirt with you, Chrys?

Chrys: What? NO!

Beth: Mm-hm.

Chrys: *swallows* Moving on.

4. With a bad car and limited funds, you never got to travel, but in Seismic Crimes, you go to California with Donovan. What was your favorite part of visiting San Francisco?

Definitely China Town. All of that culture packed together like that could be a bit jarring, but it was beautiful and fascinating. We went to a temple, ate dim sum, and explored every street.

5. It’s not hard to imagine what your lead favorite part was . . . the earthquake?

*sighs* The quake was frightening, being parted from Donovan was horrible, and what I saw after the quake was . . . *shakes her head* . . . it was all bad but the worst part was watching Donovan and Buck going at it, wanting to kill each other. They almost achieved it too.

6. If you could go back in time to tell Donovan and yourself something, what would it be?

Don’t lose the stun gun!

Chrys: Good tip.

Beth: *chuckles* Don’t I know it?

Taking on a Newsletter - guest post by Alex J. Cavanaugh

Taking on a Newsletter 

This month, the Insecure Writer’s Support Group launches its very first newsletter. It’s been a long time coming, but all of the elements had to fall into place first.

For those who don’t know, the Insecure Writer’s Support Group began September 2011 as a monthly blog hop. A comment by a fellow writer prompted my reply that he needed such a support group, and the idea for one stuck. So, I created a sign-up list, outlined the purpose and rules, and opened it up to others. We’ve been blogging the first Wednesday of the month ever since with 250-300+ blogs participating each time.

It was incredibly successful and rewarding, and I started thinking of how I could help other writers beyond the monthly blog posts. That’s when the idea of establishing a website hit me. I knew I couldn’t do it alone and enlisted six amazing writers as admins. They not only helped put together the website but established the Facebook groups as well. We built up the database of writing information and started inviting guest authors to join us in the weekly posts.

A newsletter was at the back of my mind, but since I’d never started or run one, I had no idea what to do. When the IWSG’s three-year anniversary date rolled around, we celebrated by inviting our members to submit to a writing book that would be free to all. It was a lot of fun to put together and gave us another way to help writers. (Links to download it HERE.)

I was still considering that newsletter last year. And still lost as how to do it. So instead, we held our first IWSG Anthology Contest. From the entries, ten stories were selected by a panel of agents and authors and Parallels: Felix Was Here will be released this May from Freedom Fox Press.

So now we had a monthly blog hop, a website, two Facebook groups, a free writing book, and a yearly anthology contest. Even our own t-shirt – but no newsletter! So after the New Year, I got serious. We had to start a newsletter, one that would benefit to writers and not be something just thrown together. It would require dedication and effort. All of the IWSG admins had their duties already, myself included. (Plus I didn’t know how to run a newsletter.) How could we make it happen?

Then it hit me – bring on another admin!

With the support of the other admins, I reached out to author Chrys Fey, and she agreed to run the newsletter. I got the MailChimp account set up and the newsletter header, and then Chrys and I planned the content. There will be an article from an industry leader, one from an IWSG admin, and one from an IWSG member. Plus, we’ll have helpful links, a member spotlight, news, and the upcoming IWSG blogging information. Our first issue goes out February 24 and you can sign up HERE.

So, after years of wanting a newsletter, we finally have one! Big thanks to Chrys for taking on such an important project. Now the idea of a newsletter no longer haunts me.

Mini Reviews For Stories That Wowed Me

I've been reading a lot great books lately, and I want to share them all with you. But how to do that without a super long post? Mini reviews. Let's hope I can do these awesome tales justice with a few sentences.

"Dragon's Destiny" by Alex J. Cavanaugh

This short story is the sequel to Alex's latest fantastic space opera novel, Dragon of the Stars. I loved seeing what happened with Aden and the Kargrandes. The drama was in the emotions of the characters rather than big action sequences, and Alex pulled it off beautifully. You can get this tale free from Alex as a gift to his fans.

Black Magic & Mojitos by A.A. Chamberlynn

A kick-ass teaser novella for Alexia's upcoming urban fantasy novel. It's fast-paced, dark, hilarious, and full of action. It features a supernatural bounty hunter, Zyan Star who is now one of my new favorite UF heroines!

 

Ghost of Death by Chrys Fey

A marvelous short paranormal tale that grabbed me right from the beginning. The tension is tight throughout and everyone is a suspect. Such fun in that Jolie hates being a ghost and the detective working her murder case is the only one who can see her.

This is a fantastic collection of science-fiction short stories. We have the humorous and horrific, the awe-inspiring and the monstrous. A little something for everyone and then some. "Captain Clone" was my favorite of the tales. Wait until you meet Grey Cut!

 

Double Negative by C. Lee McKenzie

A wonderfully inspiring YA contemporary that really pulled at my heartstrings. It's narrated by Hutch, a teen trapped in a dysfunctional family and feeling that he has no way to escape. Nothing is sugarcoated, dismal as reality can be, but there was still a light of hope.

River Fairchild recently released another hilarious novella about Death and Chronos, Just Another Day in Purgatory. I can't wait to read more of their adventures!

 

My family and I went to the library yesterday, and I picked up a couple of thick novels. Stephen King's Finders Keepers and L.K. Hamilton's Dead Ice. I've been reading on my Kindle so much lately, I hope my wrists can handle these books!

Have you ever wondered how to tell whether or a ghost or not? No? I’m the only one? Oh well! I guess as a writer who wrote a short story about a ghost, I can get away with this kind of thinking. So here are 7 signs you’re a ghost:

1. No one can see or hear you.

2. You can’t smell anything. Not even a pile of dog poop at your feet.

3. Your hands pass through objects like mist.

4. You can’t cry. Try as you might.

5. When you try to take a breath, your chest doesn’t rise.

6. You feel nothing, No pain. No sensations. Nothing.

7. You’re standing over your dead body.

            Stepping up to her desk, Jolie eyed her ancient desktop computer, the one she used before her dad gifted her with a laptop when she announced she was accepted to the local university. Wanting to send out the first ever tweet from the afterlife, she pushed the button to bring the device to life, but her finger poker straight through it.
