I'm so excited to finally release this book to the world. It's been a marvelous experience working on a shared world series with several other talented authors. I've been reading each book as they're released, and I've been blown away by the stories. On of the big thrills was working with Catherine Stine and creating shared scenes between our protagonists. Indigo (her mermaid) and Akila became best friends!

It was also fun writing about a supernatural being I've never wrote about before. I didn't want to go overboard with the sphynxes, but hopefully I've made them unique enough to be interesting.

Enjoy!

Cathrina Constantine
Publication date: March 5th 2021
Genres: Fantasy, Paranormal, Young Adult

When the blood moon rises, so shall the beast.

Allies to turn to enemies. Fiction turns to fact. The past and the present collide. All in an epic battle to claim unfathomable power. Can Nora unlock the secrets buried within the farmhouse in time to save herself and those dear to her from a grisly fate?

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Nora liked birds, except when the choirs assembled at the break of dawn outside her window. Slitting one eye she peered into the dimness and grumbled. Ugh! She flipped onto her stomach and burrowed her head underneath her pillow. Drifting into a restive slumber was when she’d experience her crazy daymares. Normally, those frittered into nothingness, but, a few would haunt her…

The beast’s strong fingers clamped the young man’s throat, not to strangle, but to subdue him. Suddenly, he felt bored. The thrill was gone. In spite for his jaded mood, he squeezed the man’s larynx, harder.

When the young man’s lips parted, to scream or to breathe, a visceral grin spread over the beast. The moment had arrived. The beast opened his mouth, drinking in all of him. But not his soul. His soul he couldn’t claim, only his spirited innocence, and this young man had zilch to quench his addiction.

With the deed accomplished, the beast wasn’t fulfilled as in years past. The unpalatable murdering of innocents lost its flavor, and there was no tolerance for the mundane. “You were too simple,” he grumbled at the young man’s ashen face as it purpled into a death mask, eyes open. “No struggle. No fight. You offered yourself without resistance. What fun is that. Your brother at least provided me incentive.”

He turned to the adjoining twin bed. “Youngsters can surprise me. You were tastier,” he said, peering down at another boy, roughly twelve, brown curls littering the pillow, eyes open, dead. “Fighting until the end. Your spirited demise has strengthened me. Thank you for that.”

He gathered the boy in his arms, carried him downstairs, and sat him on a chair facing the fireplace. Then the beast repeated his action with the young man, depositing him on the couch, between his sisters.

Grabbing the iron poker, he revived the flames. He set the poker aside and turned to admire his handiwork. “What a perfect family. You should be happy to spend eternity together on the same day.” Scrutinizing their faces, he reenacted each termination. “Mama in her shawl, and papa in his nightcap. What a hoot.” He readjusted papa’s cap, then swerved to his staged bodies.

“Demure Louisa, Elizabeth, and wimpy Stephen.” He shelved his hand beneath Stephen’s chin and raised it to speak to the young man. “You were born with a burden of wickedness, and groveled like a cowering worm before me. Pleading I took you anyway which was a grievous error. Your foul spirit embitters my gut even now.” He removed his hand from Stephen’s chin, letting it drop like a lead weight.

“Lastly, Edward. Ahh, Edward, you did not disappoint. An unsullied spirit.” The beast petted the boy’s hair. “Vulgarity and iniquity I have in abundance.” Forlorn tears bathed the beast’s eyes as if seeking absolution. “You must understand,” he sobbed, grimacing in anguish. “I crave virtue and purity. I need it to survive.” He spread his arms in front of his victims, begging for their forgiveness.

“I devour spirits. The more chaste the better, and they are hard to come by. Virtues keep my urges at bay.” He browsed his knuckles over Edward’s supple cheek. “My brave boy. Your purity astounded me. To lay down your life to save your family is a gift. Alas, I had already consumed their spirits.”

The beast’s face distorted into a scribbling mess as if whiffing rotting flesh.

Performing a flamboyant bow, he said, “Your hospitality was most welcome.” The phantom beast evaporated, leaving in his stead a wisp of vapor.

A gasp parted Nora’s lips, snapping open her eyes. Her rapid beating heart slammed against her ribs like a warning mallet. She didn’t or couldn’t move, her body a frigid plank. Her eyes had the capacity to flit about the room, which was now bathed in sunlight.

New Moon Rising (The Keepers of Knowledge #3) release!

Meet Tamsin Grey, witch extraordinaire…

At least, she would be if the High Council would heed her family’s warnings.

For decades her grandmother had tried warning the council that the supernatural races were not safe, especially the witches. She could feel the darkness that haunted the bloodlines, as could Tamsin as she got older.

A hopelessness often troubled Tamsin’s dreams, dreams filled with secrets hidden in the dark wood. Secrets the council had tried to hide. She feared for the witch’s future, as well as the other supernatural races, if she didn’t unravel the dreams meaning. But how?

It wasn’t until three years after her grandmother’s death and a life outside of Pyreshore, New Hampshire that she gets her chance. A letter inviting her to become a Keeper. It was the ticket she needed to bring her home and give her the opportunity to right a wrong so many chose to ignore.

But upon returning she finds that not only will she have to worry about the Witch’s Keeper watching her every move, but also Talon Strohm, son of the witches High Council. Talon tells Tamsin she can trust him but revealing the truth to him could put everything in jeopardy.

Tamsin will have to make a choice, trust Talon or let her only chance to save the witches slip away.

After all, every secret needs a Keeper.

The Darkmoon Descendant (The Keepers of Knowledge #2)

Meet Katherine King, Werewolf...

Some bloodlines run dark. Some darkness can’t be overcome.

For Katherine “Kay” King, that could mean life or death.

After losing her werewolf brother, Kay stumbled through a perpetual fog wondering what wrong she had committed so severely against the universe to have her best friend snatched away. It was a loss that left her feeling like she didn’t belong and didn’t have a purpose.

Until the day a perplexing letter arrived. An invitation to join a centuries-old assemblage of supernatural creatures charged with maintaining the history of all supernatural races—The Keepers of Knowledge. However, when the letter arrived, so did the nightmares of being hunted by a pack of gray-eyed Alphas hell-bent on collecting a mysterious treasure she possessed.

Even accepting the invitation of the Keepers and moving to Pyreshore to train didn’t put an end to the dreams. In fact, day one of training brought her face to face with the eyes that haunted her dreams. Eyes that do something to her in the light of day she doesn’t feel when she closes her eyes to sleep. Eyes she’s certain will be the obstacle she must overcome in her quest to secure her race’s artifact—the one she protects in her dreams. The one tied to a curse that has plagued her family for centuries.

Can she trust the man behind those eyes to help her retrieve the artifact and move her bloodline in a new direction? Or will her family’s secret pull her into the darkness as her ancestors before her?

After all, every secret needs a keeper.

Happy 2021 and a new release!

Cheers to you all!

Here's to a year of love, peace, and compassion.

And books!

The first book in the paranormal romance series, The Keepers of Knowledge, is now available. Echoes in the Bloodline by R.J. Lloyd kicks off a great shared world project. My novel, Curse of the Hunted, will be available on April 12th.

Meet Rowan LaForge, Mimic and former NYC foster kid...

Rowan’s story is an All-American tragedy. One that if Shakespeare were alive and writing today, he’d write one like hers. Orphaned at a young age, growing up in the foster care system in the NYC area. Bounced around until she discovered she had the ability to shift to look like another human…

Oh wait. Did I say Shakespeare? I mean King. Or maybe Koontz. Meyer? Well, either way, that’s where her story took a turn. Facing having to come to terms with the fact that those were not just bedtime stories her parents had told her before they passed, she has to learn what she is and how to harness it. And just when she thinks she’s got a handle on her life? She gets a letter.

Dear Rowan LaForge,

This letter will change her entire life… and her world. As she’s thrust into the world of supernatural beings, she also learns a great deal about who and what she is, where she comes from and… well? Lee. She learns about Lee McKinnon. And that aspect of her life alone is worth it all.

After all, every secret needs a keeper.

Meet the new Keepers

Meet… the new Keepers of Knowledge…

Hidden within the world we live in are all the beings we tell tales about around the campfire, read about in books, watch in movies. They’re the ones we think about as going bump in the night, standing in the shadows as we walk through a dim area or following us down empty streets.

But in reality, they’re the people standing next to in the bank, buying coffee before us at the local cafe and maybe even ringing you up at the grocery store. They’re everywhere – Vampires, Witches, Mimics, Shifters, Fae, Merfolk, Banshees, Gargoyles, Sphynxes and Werewolves. Blending in with society.

However, despite their acclimation into the mundane world, they have factions of their own. A hierarchy within each race that all answers to the High Council of the Supernatural. And this council has recently deemed it necessary to add a member of each race to the Keepers of Knowledge.

The Keepers – a faction of supernatural beings charged with the vital task of authenticating and recording every major historical event and artifact that exists within supernatural world around us… and all of its secrets. Here, within these pages, you will get to meet each of the new candidates for these coveted positions.

Arriving in Pyreshore is a first look into this world, the town they live in, what brought about this change, and the characters you will come to love.

They who hold the knowledge keep the secrets. After all, every secret needs a Keeper.

Happy (early) Halloween! And a bit of an update.

Happy Halloween! I know it's early, but I decorated before fall even arrived this year in September, because we need something a little fun in our lives these days. I hope you're all well and safe. Our household remains Covid free so far, and flu shots have been had. We might be going stir crazy, but we're playing it safe.

I've been busy these past few months promoting for my pen name. My co-author's PA kept us hopping, but I'm hoping to catch up on all the things which piled up. The first thing on my list, though, is to keeping writing. I have three projects in the works, and I barely have time for anything else. Yet next year will be a big release year for both me and my pen name.

Right now, I wanted to wish you all the Halloween fun of the season with some free books! From today through the 31st, I'm offering three free books!

Dark Dawning (Totem #1)

Three sisters. Seven totems. One chance to save the world.

Ghost Dancer (The Paramours #1)

Ghost hunting with a kiss.

And from my pen name, Morena Silver...

Even when she shares with him the horrific vision and pleas for an alliance, he is convinced his kingdom will stand.

But then a rash of attacks and murders rocks the vampires' loyalties to their lord while his growing attraction to the shifter ambassador makes his subjects question his sanity. Now Aderyn must work to help Odran hold his kingdom even if she does not understand what is growing between them.

Zombies are real!

We all love a good zombie apocalypse movie where the good guys fight off hoards of zombies and save humanity. But are zombies really that far-fetched? Maybe not if you look deeper into mother nature.

Have you ever heard of Ophiocordyceps? It is a fungi. Harmless, right? Not if you’re an ant. When an ant come across these fungal spores in nature, the fungus infects the insect and spread through its body. Fungal cells in the ant’s head releases chemicals that hijack the insect’s central nervous system. The fungus can then force the ant to climb high. There, it kills the ant and a stalk grows out of the back of the ant’s head so spores can be released to infect more ants on the grounds below.

Sometimes, nature is more scary than fiction.

New covers, website, and lessons learned #writerslife

First new cover!

Fearless finally has a cover it deserves! Though I'm already itching to make another. I'm telling myself to wait until next year. I need to get some writing done!

The book got a little boost in downloads when I changed the cover on Amazon, but it has settled back into its normal rank. It does all right. It always has downloads every month, but does it convince readers to buy my other books? I don't think so.

Writer Lesson #1: Times have changed. Free books do not lead to sales of your other books.

The TOTEM series!

I LOVE these new covers for the TOTEM series. I spent much more time on them than I anticipated, but it was worth it. The covers are much more urban fantasy than the previous ones.

There have been no bumps up in sales when I changed the covers and the keywords on Amazon. Yet I haven't done any promoting either.

Writer Lesson #2: A great cover and a fantastic story aren't going to sell books. Promotion is key. If you have the means, buy ads.

Feeling quirky!

For the Sasquatch Susies trilogy, I was inspired by my cozy mystery friends. I love their simple and fun covers. These were easy to make and I really love them. I'm going to do up new covers in this style for my other erotica titles. But next year. Need to write.

Writer Lesson #3: Write first. All the other author business can come later.

I've also been fussing around with my website. I left the hosting company and that was a mess. They'd been perfectly fine until I expressed my desire to leave and take my domain name with me. I finally managed to get my domain name from them and registered it with another host. It was half as cheap, and I was feeling good. Then I discovered that if I want to actually use my domain name with my new host, I'm going to have pay more for it. They didn't say this upfront. I had to go digging for it. And the price to use my domain name with them was much more than my former host.

I'm not paying that much money just to attach my domain name to a site. BUT my domain is registered with them, and I can't change that fact for 60 days. I can't even get a refund.

So I've currently moved to a free site on Wix. It will likely be my permanent site from here on out. I like the way it's designed, and it's easy to use. I'm also going to stay here on Blogger for a while. I need to get around to catching up with everyone!

Two lessons learned here.

Writer Lesson #4: Always read the fine print, even when you have to dig for it or ask. Ask for the details even if you don't think there is anything else to know.

Writer Lesson #5: I surveyed several author friends, and many feel that readers don't go to author websites anymore. It isn't essential to have your own site these days. (Don't waste money on your own domain name!) Usually only writers check out other writers' websites. Being present on social media is important, but an Amazon page or a Facebook page is enough as a home base.

It's been a while, but I'm writing again. It's a short Samhain story for my pen name, but at least it's something!

What lessons have you learned lately that you would like to share?

Book Blurb:

“I only desire your talent...”

Twelve-year-old Lindsey McKay's biggest dream is to be a famous ballerina. But after moving to New York, she ends up at the Community Center with a teacher who’s a burly bear in tights.

When she meets Madame Destinée, the teacher of a top dance school who offers her classes for free, Lindsey can't believe her luck. In exchange, she must perform in the school’s exclusive midnight shows, ones sure to make her a star. But something’s not right...

One by one, the other dancers disappear. Each time they do, a music box with a figurine just like the missing ballerina joins Madame Destinée’s growing collection. If Lindsey doesn’t discover the truth about the dance school, she might end up a tiny figurine herself.

My review:

Lindsey McKay had to leave her friends, her home, and her dreams in Nebraska when her family moved to New York so that her little sister could go to Julliard. Her parents work a lot, and Lindsey is left on her own to stew in her jealousy. Stopping to pet an adorable dog on the street, she meets Madame Destinée, an infamous ballet teacher. She sniffs out great talent, and Madame believes Lindsey has it. Taking classes with Madame is a dream, but things just aren't right at the exclusive school. When the other students start to disappear, Lindsey discovers the reason is more chilling than she ever imagined. Will she be able to save the other students before she becomes a permanent part of Madame Destinée's collection?

I do love modern fairy tales, especially with a good dose of the paranormal. This YA story hooked me right away in Lindsey's world. The frightening move to a big city, the sadness at having left her whole life behind, and the green streak of jealousy when a sibling gets all the attention. I certainly sympathized, feeling how it all seemed unfair. Lindsey has a strong voice, but not a mean one. She does still love her sister despite everything. Then all the wonder when she meets Madame Destinée and is introduced to her magical school. The details are lovely, and even later when the creepiness sneaks in, it is still hauntingly beautiful, especially with the music boxes.

Madame Destinée herself is a striking character. Mysterious and dominating, yet seemingly kind to her students. All those pretty cakes and treats. Yum! I was a big fan of Robert. I sympathized with him, too, that his family wanted him to play hockey and not dance. The whole cast of characters was varied and enchanting. Or enchanted, as the case had been with some!

I highly recommend this book to fans of YA paranormals. It had me under its spell.
