Wicked Wednesday - holiday themed books

With the American Thanksgiving here and Christmas not too far away, I'm thinking about holiday themed books. Yes, there are holiday themed paranormal romances. The genre has not escaped that trend. Obviously the publishers believe readers want them when all the holiday themed books are released around this time of year.

I once thought the holiday themed books were silly. Having read a dozen or so, I like them a bit more. They can be a bit cheesy, but sometimes cheese is good. Sometimes you want your book to share in the Christmas warmth or Halloween chills.

Paranormal romance gives you a lot of freedom to choose different holidays and to create some of your own. Inspiration is all around you. Everyone has experiences from the holidays to put into their writing. Goodness knows that my holidays never go smoothly. There's always some drama or excitement.

The holidays evoke certain emotions in people. You can mirror that with your characters. It's a good way to get your readers to relate to your characters and draw them further into your story.

Do you like holiday themed books? If you do, what are some of your favorites?

  3. My second book has a local holiday - it was my first attempt at one.
Favorite holiday book? How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Yeah, once I find a favorite I stick with it.

  4. Cherie, I know how you feel. Halloween is just so much more fun!

    Farawayeyes, me too!

Alex, yes! I wasn't even thinking along those lines, but I've loved that book since I was a child.

  5. I used to love Christmas, and Christmas-themed books were always a favourite of mine. They seemed to add a bit of extra warmth. When I was a child, my family attended a friend's party every Christmas eve and would listen to another friend read "The Night Before Christmas". It was fantastic.

  6. I'm half and half... I don't mind them, but I also don't rush out to read them first.... Though if incorporated into a non-themed story then it works well:)

  7. I can't say I've read many holiday-themed books! Well... besides picture books that I've read to my kids. Somehow, though, I don't think that counts. :)

  8. I don't mind holiday-themed books, but I don't seek them out. My favorites are A Christmas Carol and Holidays on Ice by Sedaris.
