My review:
Andromeda likes her life just the way it is. Her comfortable world is changing, though. She's now the age where she'll be assigned her role amongst the crew and be matched with her life mate. Not only does that stress weigh down upon her, but the ship will be arriving at their destination, Paradise 21, at the same time. Her hopes crumble as she's assigned a job with her mother working with plants, and she isn't matched with her best friend and secret love, Sirius. Instead she's paired with a young man named Corvus who's nothing like Sirius at all. Paradise 21 turns out not to be so perfect. Something deadly is looming in the lush jungle, and only Andromeda has the clues to figure out what that might be. Caught in an emotional tug-of-war between Sirius and Corvus, can she focus on solving the mystery and save the colony?

Aubrie Dionne has created a science-fiction romance masterpiece. She takes us from the cozy confines of the ship into a world full of vivid colors and great wonder. Paradise 21 looks every bit the Eden the colony had hoped, but things aren't always as they seem. There're mysteries and ghosts lurking about, and Andromeda finds herself in the center of it all. Andromeda is a fabulous protagonist. All her emotional turmoil builds a strong character, and I found myself cheering out loud for her. Usually I'm not a fan of love triangles, but Dionne works in Andromeda's mixed feelings about Corvus and Sirius very well. Her relationships feel pure and natural. Corvus and Sirius are opposites, and both equally likable. I wasn't sure who I wanted to win Andromeda's heart.

This is my favorite book by Dionne to date. She never fails to wow me with the twists and turns in her plots, and her smooth flowing prose. The threat in Colonization is highly original and more frightening than even the biggest of space monsters. Of course, you're going to have to read it to find out for yourself!

My review:
Eridani Smith is rejected one last time in her request for a lifemate. As a product of illegal pairing, her DNA is considered flawed and thus she's forced to face life alone. Most people shun her already except for her loving sister. Things are about to change, though. The colonization ship is approaching their destination and probes have discovered it's already occupied. Eri, being the colony's only linguist, is sent with an exploratory team to gather information, but they're attacked when they land. Her teammates are taken, but Eri manages to escape with the help of Striver, the gorgeous leader of a peaceful people. They shun technology, but their enemies greatly desire it and will stop at nothing to obtain what they want. And what they want is the ship with all its weapons. Eri must find some way to help her people and Striver's, going against her commander's orders. She loses her heart to the brave leader, but fears that she can't stop the commander's ultimate plan.

This is a magnificent tale of science-fiction and romance. The imagery is brilliant with its hulking ship with a brain in a jar and the dangerous swampy planet with its fearsome creatures. I could almost smell the stink of the boar! The story builds into a deep and twisted tale with a rich history. I enjoyed reading about Striver's people and what happened when they arrived on the planet. He's an impressive hero and it's no wonder Eri falls for him. Eri is an impressive character. She seems meek at the beginning, but she finds a great strength within her and grows into a heroine that I very much admired. Striver and Eri's romance grows slowly, and it's sweet to see it develop. They complement one another perfectly even having lived two very different lives.

Action, romance, and mystery. There's something in HAVEN 6 for everyone. Aubrie Dionne never ceases to amaze me with her outstanding writing. I highly recommend this book to all readers.

Elements of Great Sci Fi Romance

I’m so excited to talk about one of my all-time favorite genres today! I’ve seen lists of what makes great science fiction, but today I’m talking about what makes great science fiction romance. (The best kind in my opinion!)

I’ve always loved Star Wars and Star Trek because they had it all: adventure, science fiction, romance, action. (Although Star Trek could use a little more romance here and there for my tastes! I loved the relationship between Jean Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher, and who can forget Riker and Deanna Troi? Even Data had a bit of romance here and there.)

To write a great sci fi romance you need it all, and the blend has to be just right. I’ve come up with a list of what I feel makes a great sci fi romance story. In the comments section, I’d love to hear your own ideas.

1.      Must have romance. The romance should drive the plot forward, but also somehow be linked to the science fiction aspect. In Haven 6, conditions aboard the Heritage dictate all romantic encounters (The colonists are there to preserve human DNA without genetic mutations or inbreeding). Eri is a result of an illegal pairing, so the computer doesn't think she's adequate to be matched, which is why she finds love on Haven 6 instead! I’ve linked the romance to the science, and made it all drive the plot forward from the very beginning.

2.      Must have adventure in cool settings. The best part about science fiction is that you can write it anywhere; aboard a space ship, on an alien planet, or on Earth. Setting is very important, and traveling to different backdrops increases the adventure by tenfold. In Haven 6, I made sure to have scenes aboard the deep space transport ship, and on their colony planet. This planet was one of the most involved settings I've ever had to write. Haven 6 is mostly jungle, but it also has swamps, villages, mountains, and a mysterious golden liquid that seeps up from the planet's core.

3.      Must have high stakes action. Another awesome part of science fiction romance is all of the various technological weapons you can create: lasers, blasters, subsonic tranquilizer rays.  In Haven 6, there are a few laser fights, with a big one at the end. The lasers are crucial to the plot, and I can't tell you much more without spoilers! The stakes are high: they are battling for who will have rights to live on the planet.

4.      Must have science. The story must have some basis in reality with fantastical scientific ideas linked to today’s science. In Haven 6, I posed certain questions: What if people could live their entire lives on a space ship? What would people do when the Earth becomes uninhabitable? What if we reach a habitable planet, and there's already a civilization inhabiting it? Although these ideas seem far-fetched today as you drive to Dunkin’ Doughnuts to order your latte, reality is: the sun will burn out someday, and we may even pollute the Earth before that happens. People will have to find somewhere else to live if humanity is going to carry on. I took a scientific fact and ran with it, creating a fantastical scientific idea.

 Aubrie Dionne grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over again until she could recite and reenact every single scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek the Next Generation - favorite character was Data by far - and Indiana Jones. But, her all time favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. My review:

Being stuck on a ship for so long, Nike wants nothing more than to have her feet on solid ground and breathe in fresh air. She aches for a place to call home, and upon seeing Cupidis, its beauty captures her heart. This is where she wants to be. First, though, she and her crew must prepare the way for her people to eliminate the aliens already living on the planet. The Cupidians haven't known war in centuries. Their king is near death, and their spoiled prince, Edonys must find a mate very soon. The gorgeous prince didn't expect to feel such a pull toward one of his human guests. Nike thought it would be simple to conquer these peaceful people, but she, too, feels something unexpected. Will she make the strike to help win the planet for the humans or will she follow her heart?

This is my favorite book in Cherie's Gravity trilogy. It's not as dark and gritty as the previous two. It's full of wonder and colorful imagery that made me fall in love with Cupidis as Nike did. Cherie's descriptions are beautifully written and left me in awe. Nike is a strong and unique heroine. She's more a tough Sigourney Weaver type than the typical softer romantic lead. Edonys was a surprise to me too. He has every opportunity to be vain and arrogant, but he has so much heart. I love that the relationship grows organically outside of their duties to their peoples.

In the first two installments of the Gravity trilogy, we saw terrifying prisons, deadly chases, and fearsome creatures. Pull of Gravity takes you to a different level of science-fiction intrigue. There's espionage, subterfuge, and treachery. I was holding my breath at parts and didn't realize it. Cherie outdid herself with the final novella in the series. Goodness knows I couldn't resist the pull of her incredible storytelling!

My review:
Phoebus is tormented by his daimon and forced to execute his fellow Aresians. He attempts to escape through a wormhole, but ends up being captured on a primitive planet called Earth. Marissa hopes to find a new life for herself, but the world outside her tiny community isn't what she expected it to be. Her old friends turned scavengers have nefarious plans for her. Her only chance for help is to free Phoebus and flee with him. They're hunted and must learn to trust one another, finding more than just trust along the way.

This is the second novella in Cherie Reich's Gravity series. She has outdid herself with this dark and action packed science-fiction fantasy romance. She starts you off right in the middle of the action, and I was on the edge of my seat through the whole thing. The image Cherie paints of an Earth hit by an asteroid is harsh and dismal, but not without hope. Marissa has the light of hope in her heart. She's sweet and compassionate, and though she's rightfully afraid, she has the courage to do what's necessary when the time comes. Phoebus is from a cold and war-hungry people who make themselves into something more by infusing themselves with daimons. It's fascinating and terrifying at the same time. The Aresians are a complex culture and the daimons a mystery. This aspect really intrigued me because I didn't know what Phoebus' daimon would do next.

This story is light on the romance, so I believe sci-fi and dark fantasy fans will love it.  There's fighting, betrayal, and unexpected twists. Cherie's writing is sharp and her imagery vivid. She makes the story come alive before your eyes. Fighting Gravity captivated me from beginning to end. Even if you haven't read the first book in the series, Defying Gravity, you can still thoroughly enjoy this one.

My review:

The Earth is breathing her last few breathes, and everyone must flee or die on the surface. Yet even in the chaos, there is still a glimmer of hope and love. James Wilfred just watched his love fly off into the stars, but he's determined to help those left behind to safety. He begins a mission to find an old colony ship to take his people to a new home on the moon. Fighting his way through the city, he saves Skye and the little girl under her care. With nowhere left to go, they join him on his search. The city is crawling with feral drug addicts called moonshiners and nothing seems to be in their favor. James and Skye refuse to give up. They cannot fail the hundreds of people depending on them nor can they abandon the spark of love growing between them.

A Hero Rising is action from start to finish. Aubrie Dionne paints a vivid picture of a civilization about to collapse in on itself. It's dark, gritty, and frighteningly possible. Humans are fleeing the planet in gigantic colony ships. Those remaining will be left to die in the nuclear aftermath or in the rotting hands of the moonshiners. It's a gripping, fast-paced plot. James is a strong and admirable character. You'll find yourself cheering him on from the beginning. Skye is a survivor. She lived a hard life, but her heart remains pure. Both James and Skye have lost someone, but they somehow find their hearts can still go on with each other. The most fascinating part of the book was the terrifying moonshiners. Monsters and moon myths. The drug, Morpheus, turns addicts into stuff of nightmares. It's great science-fiction romance with a nice dose of horror.

Tundra 37 Review

Aboard the Expedition, the Lifers carry on with their every day tasks as the deep space vessel speeds along to a new paradise. The regular calm order is destroyed when the ship is damaged by a comet. Unable to complete the mission, they land on Tundra 37 with the hope of settling on the frozen planet.

Gemme is the ship's Match-maker. Her life is quiet and full of numbers. When her name pops up on the screen along with the gorgeous Lieutenant Miles Brentwood's, she panics and deletes it. Yet it seems fate won't be denied. Gemme is assigned to be on Miles' team to search Tundra 37 for a fuel source the ship desperately needs. Out in the numbing cold, they face monsters, a greedy teammate, and each other.

This story is wonderfully deep and complex. Talking about Gemme and Miles' romance alone won't do it justice. Their romance is sweet and amazing. It flowed naturally with the story and tugged on my heartstrings. I cheered on Gemme against her rival and uttered dreamy sighs with Miles' tender thoughts. I adored Gemme's character. She's different from the usual warrior-like sci-fi heroine, but she's strong in her own way.

The secondary plots pulled me in just as much. I will forever have the image of the ancient Seers - the pilots of the Expedition - strung up in the ship burned into my mind. The little details Aubrie gives us are fascinating and horrifying at the same time. The glimpses of their memories of an Earth falling apart had me on the edge of my seat. (I can't wait to read A Hero Rising next!) My heart ached for them, but I loved how I couldn't figure out what they'd do next. They had their secrets just like various Lifers on the ship. Secrets passed from one generation to the next which could either save or destroy them.

I'm happy to have this chance to help promote her books on her blog tour and ask her a few questions.

I know you write both fantasy and sci-fi romance. What does sci-fi allow you to do that fantasy does not?

Wow, what a great question. I've never thought about this before. For me, it's the opposite: fantasy has no boundaries, but science fiction needs to be rooted in real life in some way. It's more challenging for me to write, and for some reason, more fresh. Although, I love fantasy, and when this series and the spin offs are finished, I'm going back to the dragons and the elves!

I absolutely agree. Sci-fi is more challenging to write. Do you feel compelled to follow any of the tropes and stereotypes that are prevalent in science-fiction?

Sometimes I pay homage to them: Like the sandworms in Paradise 21 are a reference to the ones in Dune. The ice world of Tundra 37 is inspired, in part, by the planet Hoth in Star Wars. I try not to copy, but invent my own worlds with hints of the past tropes in them.

Your worlds are definitely unique. Have you gotten any grief over being a sci-fi and romance author? Have you felt any pressure because of your gender in the male dominated sci-fi genre?

I've made sure to advertise my books as soft science-fiction with romantic elements, so I think the hard core sci-fi fans looking for technical explanations stay away! One male reader said something like "If this is the way women think, than that explains a lot of things..." which I thought was hilarious. Maybe it will draw the male readers into romance? Teach them a little something? Hehe.

I like the way you think! Do you think humans will travel to new worlds?

I hope so, but I don't want to be one of them! I'm so afraid of space. I think I've watched too many movies where someone rips their helmet off and their eyes bug out and explode. *shivers* Space travel = not for me.

You have such great adventures in your mind, though! Do you believe modern day humans are ready to meet aliens?

No. I think we'd torture them and have our own prejudices. That's if they didn't kill us first on the spot, or make us slaves. I used to want to be the generation that gets to meet aliens, but after watching too many of those Ancient Alien episodes on the History Channel, I'm not so sure anymore! I actually went to a talk with a man who says he's been abducted several times, and his stories creeped me out!

I feel the same way. Do you think science-fiction literature can affect social change?

I certainly hope so! We need to start thinking about our resources, wildlife preservation, and the world's population. These are reoccurring themes in The New Dawn series, and the reason why everyone has to leave Earth. I tried to make it realistic in some ways but not be too preachy.

Do you think the science-fiction industry is changing?

I'd like to think that sci-fi romance will take off in the next few years with the sequel to Avatar coming out. I think it's a great genre to explore!

I'm a big fan of the genre myself. Finally, what advice do you have for aspiring authors?

You have to be persistent and write a whole truck load of novels to be successful in today's publishing world. It took me four novels to get an agent, and I'm still counting to see how many it will take to make a decent income and turn my writing into a part time job for good.

I finished the first draft of my Steampunk Cthulhu short story. I'm letting it sit a few days before I edit it. It's with my CP's already and then it will go to my writers' group to be critiqued. My short stories are really getting a workout this year.
