Stubborn Old Ghost vs Teen Psychic: Who Wins?

Character relationships are a lot like real life relationships, only more so. They’re loving, complicated and sometimes over the top. When you write paranormal, it adds a whole new ‘dimension’ to any relationship.

Take Indigo Eady (ghost-whispering teen psychic) and Franny Bishop (interfering Victorian ghost-madam). They ‘reside’ in the same household and basically have a mother-daughter relationship. As a Victorian, Franny believes that Indigo needs a man. She’s a good-hearted old ghost and wants Indigo to have her heart’s desire. As a woman who *cough* knows men, Franny knows Badger is the one for Indigo. No matter what Indigo says Franny will have her way!

Check out this excerpt from Second Death. To set the scene, Indigo and the gang are tasked with investigating the case of missing paranormals. It’s determined that the common factor is the monthly ball at Gertrude’s Garden.

Gertrude’s Garden is the non-dimensional nightclub where all paranormals are welcome. It’s also the place where living people with no psychic abilities whatsoever can see and experience paranormal things. A place where the living and dead alike can mix and mingle.

So Franny finagles invitations for Indigo, Badger and Simon, and plans a little matchmaking along the way.

The second item was a matching dance card with a small pencil attached to a narrow, tasseled cord. The inside listed different dances such as the waltz and quadrille. Several of the dances already had names scribbled next to them. Not sure if I was flattered or not.

Two days to prepare, then. And by prepare, I meant talk myself into going back there.

POP!

I jumped slightly. “Franny, do you have to startle me like that?”

“Sorry, dear. I wanted to make sure you received the invitations. We’ll need time to alter a dress and style your hair.” Franny, as always, was dressed to kill. Today she wore a fuscia-colored day dress, form-fitting on the top to accentuate her bosom.

Looking at her, I shook my head. “I don’t know. I don’t really dress up well like you do. I hadn’t really planned on dancing, either. Couldn’t I just wear my jeans?”

She looked horrified. “Of course not! Besides, you’ll never get past Gertie wearing that garb you young women wear these days. It’s scandalous! I’m sure Badger would like to see you dressed up...”

I sighed. “I told you. Badger and I aren’t—”

“That’s nice, dear. Now, meet me in the attic and we’ll find something lovely to impress Badger.”

“Stubborn old ghost!”

Indigo Eady is not clumsy. At least, that’s what she keeps telling everyone. Can she help that the overactive spirit community of Sabrina Shores causes her psychic abilities to short-circuit? It’s unfortunate that her cute friend Badger is often on the receiving end of her mishaps. At times, she is positively hazardous to his health. Even so, sparks fly in more than one direction.

My review:

After her father's death, Indigo has had little time to grieve and let go. Especially moving across the ocean to live with her uncle and cousin Simon. Her own sorrows must be pushed back again when they come upon the third anniversary of the death of Simon's mother and little brother. The little angel comes back, and they must find out why. Indigo and the gang investigate a hit-and-run that's been covered up. Yet will the investigation stir up something that will be dangerous to them all?

This second book in the Indigo Eady series is just as fun and quirky as the first. It's a YA cozy mystery, but I have dubbed it a snug mystery after the little room in the pub where Indigo and her friends meet to discuss things. Just when you think you have everything figured out, the tale twists around and keeps you guessing until the end.

I still adore Indigo. A not-so-average nearly seventeen-year-old girl with powers to see ghosts and retrieve powerful memories. She has boy troubles and ghost problems. Sometimes both are so frustrating that I don't know which one I'd prefer! My favorite character is Franny, the ghost of a madam from a century ago. Amazing characterization.

Franny: Well, I’m quite confused on why you haven’t set about courting Indigo. Is it those baggy sweat shirts she wears? I do try to get her to accentuate her feminine wiles at times.

Paranormal happenings at the Eady household are the norm. Recently, things have become downright peculiar. Givin' Up The Ghost review

Blurb:
Indigo Eady is NOT clumsy. At least, not until she moves to Sabrina Shores. Can she help it if she’s off-kilter since moving to a modern day medieval village in England? Who knew it would be teeming with afterlife? Ghosts are coming out of the woodwork: Franny Bishop, an interfering nineteenth century madam; Hannah, a technology-loving seventeenth century serving wench; and Cleo, a prissy ghost cat. Not to mention Bart Bagley, the murder victim!

With the overwhelming psychic overload, it's no wonder Indigo somehow manages to bowl Badger over every time they meet. She is becoming hazardous to his health, not to mention her own. If it weren’t for the murdered spirits and interfering ghosts vying for her attention, her life would be so much easier! 

To top it all off, why did Badger have to be so cute? That is no doubt the problem. Mix needy dead people and very-much-alive cute guys, and you have the ingredients for a world totally out of whack. Even so, sparks fly in more than one direction! 
 
But who has time for romance? They have a murderer to catch, and time is running short as the body count mounts.

My review:
Having recently lost her father, Indigo Eady has moved to a village in England to live with her Uncle Richard and cousin Simon. She's looking forward to a fresh start and forgetting the troubles her psychic talents have brought her. Yet in an old town, there are a lot of spirits and it's hard to find some peace. Simon convinces Indigo to help find out what happened to his best friend Badger's father. When she discovers the man has been murdered and the police haven't done a thing, the friends launch their own investigation. They've gotten themselves into something bigger than they imagined, and to top it off, Indigo can't stop herself from liking Badger even when she makes a fool of herself in front of him all the time. That problem will have to wait when it might be her life on the line next.

A fantastic ghost story with intrigue and a bit of romance. This well written tale builds with the list of suspects and has you on the edge of your seat, eager to see what will happen next. Indigo has had it rougher than the average teen and acts more mature than her sixteen years. Her character is refreshing in the YA genre where the teen angst can become immensely annoying. To add to that, the boy she likes is a good guy. No bad boy complex here. I'd love to see more teens in YA books like them. While I enjoyed the main characters, it was the ghosts that made me laugh. Chloe the ghost cat who particularly loves the guys, and Franny who was once a madam became my favorite.

This is a book for readers of any age. It has a sweet quirkiness I adored. A little bit of a Scooby gang vibe, but with real ghosts. I can't wait for Gwen Gardner's next book in the Indigo Eady series, A Guilty Ghost Surprised, which will come out later this year.

Today's tidbit: I was worried that the romance in The Marquis would be overshadowed by the conflict between Marc and Vetis. It turned out that the romance was the most powerful aspect of the story.

In other story news: the paranormal crime anthology, Mortis Operandi is now available. My short story, "Immaculate" is featured within. It was one of the stories I wrote and submitted this year as part of my 2012 goals. I'm happy to be part of this great collection of stories.
