#IWSG for June 2017

The Insecure Writer's Support Group (IWSG) is the brilliant idea of Alex J. Cavanaugh. The purpose of the group is to share doubts and insecurities and to encourage one another. Please visit the other participants and share your support. A kind word goes a long way.

This month's awesome co-hosts are: JH Moncrieff, Madeline Mora-Summonte, Jen Chandler, Megan Morgan, and Heather Gardner!

The June IWSG Question: Did you ever say "I quit"? If so, what happened to make you come back to writing?

Oh writing, I can't quit you. *said in a really bad twangy accent*

Yes, I've turned my back on the computer and threw up my arms. Sometimes in our writer's journey, everything seems against us. No sales, no reviews, no friendly comments. All doubt, frustration, and heartache. You feel like you're screaming into the abyss, and it's not even staring back at you.

I couldn't quit even if I wanted to. Stories will always be forming in my head just like they have been all my life. I'd keep writing even if no one ever read my stories. Why? Because it is the essence of who I am, my very soul. I create, and it is through words which I do this.

  1. Right on! I can't quit, either. Every time I have, I just ended up back in front of the computer, daydreaming and typing away. ^_^

  2. I'm glad you never plan to quit. I'd miss your amazing writing too much!

  3. I think I would keep writing, too, even if no one ever read anything. I have to do something with all the story ideas in my head.

  4. Yes! I totally agree with you on all counts!

  5. Fortunately people do read and enjoy your stories so you really can't quit now!

  6. Glad you couldn't give in to the urge to quit and have so many story ideas.

  7. Love the word hug image. Embraces the love of writing perfectly. Thank you for sharing.

  8. I totally get this, Christine! Writing is a huge, important part of who I am as a person, and it's what I believe I am meant to be doing. :)

  9. I got into writing so late in life that I love reading about people who have been writing their whole lives and is such an integral part of who they are.

  10. Sometimes there are moments, especially when a rejection comes in, that I have taken a second look at my writing career. Yes, my writing defines me to a great extent. It's an essential part of my life and I guess that why rejections hurt. Sometimes it seems as if editors and publishers are rejecting you.

  12. I believe you...it shows in your work...you are a fantastic writer!!

  13. I can't quit either. I may take breaks and go on a crafting or painting kick, but the stories are still in my head.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Exactly. The stories are there, even if the writing isn't.

  15. Thank you, everyone, for your supportive and sympathetic comments. I love connecting with other writers in the IWSG. You guys rock!

  16. I had imagined myself always being a hobby writer. My hubby was the one who told me that was unacceptable. But that's the truth: it's satisfying just to write for us, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh man, I totally understand, and have done the exact same thing!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love this, especially that picture.

  19. I love how many writers today are talking about how frustrating writing can be and yet--we CAN'T give it up for good. That's what I love about this group, the sense of community and connection. We think the same!

  20. "and it's not even staring back at you." Right? Your whole post was just how I feel.

  21. "I'd keep writing even if no one read my stories." <---I was just talking about this with a friend last night. It's true for me, too.

As is the rest of this post. I could have written it. Must be a writer thing. :)

  22. Hi Christine - no friendly comments from us lot - that's definitely not something that happens - yes 'odd' ones on occasions, or people not really stopping, but just saying "I woz 'here" ... throwing hands up is ok ... good luck with the editing - cheers Hilary

  23. I'd keep writing no matter what too! Hugs to all of us crazy lot of writers.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 'I couldn't quit even if I wanted to' - that's perfectly said. I feel the same way:)

  25. I'm completely distracted by the picture. Where'd you get it? Is it public domain? I can conceive how to do it in Photoshop, but I'm not clever enough to make it happen.

    Sigh.

  26. I'm kind of writing for myself too. But I'll admit that my story and characters will feel more real to me as more and more people read the story.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I keep coming up with story ideas. I can't shut them down! The writer's plight :)

Here's my IWSG June post: how to survive the 'little quits'

  28. I echo your sentiments. Woot! Never quit. Impossible!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'd also write even if no one read my books. But it breaks my heart when I feel unheard. :/

  30. This seems to be a common consensus today. We write because we enjoy it and because it's who we are!

  31. "You feel like you're screaming into the abyss, and it's not even staring back at you." Oh that is so true, Christine! I have finally decided that I'm writing for me, and I'd write even if no one else reads it. That helps me keep moving forward. It's a little lie I tell myself to keep going, when in my heart of hearts I want desperately to be read and understood! Good luck with your writing this month!

  32. What a beautiful post! Like it's coming straight out of my heart. So me! And the picture - where did you find it? I want to use it. It's so reflective of every writer. We are all in love with our words.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh, we do keep going through thick and thin. Mostly thin when it comes to paychecks.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Lovely post. Writing is in our souls. Whether we write for fun, publication, or to vent, we write because we need to.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I misread the line after "I can't quit you" and I thought you said you threw up on your computer. If I threw up on my computer I would quit writing. I would have to throw out my computer, too.

  36. Love that picture! :)
Oh yeah, a writer's got to do what a writer's got to do!
    WRITE!

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's the same. Some days, writing really sucks, but the one thing that would be worse is to never write again. So even the thought of quitting usually puts me in a writing panic sort of feeling. :-D

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm glad you didn't quit! Sure, writing isn't easy, but then, nothing worth having is.
