IWSG for March 2014

The Insecure Writer's Support Group (IWSG) is the brilliant idea of Alex J. Cavanaugh. The purpose of the group is to share doubts and insecurities and to encourage one another. Please visit the other participants and share your support. A kind word goes a long way.

I've been working on revisions for almost three months now. I know, it's part of the writing process. But sometimes, the thing we love can be painful.

Enjoy these fun quotes about the pleasure and pain of writing!

"Writing a novel is like making love, but it’s also like having a tooth pulled. Pleasure and pain. Sometimes it’s like making love while having a tooth pulled." ~ Dean Koontz

"I get an urge, like a pregnant elephant, to go away and give birth to a book." ~ Stephen Fry

"Writing a book is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, then it becomes a master, then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster, and fling him to the public." ~ Winston Churchill

"When writing a novel, that's pretty much entirely what life turns into: "House burned down. Car stolen. Cat exploded. Did 1500 easy words, so all in all it was a pretty good day." ~ Neil Gaiman

"Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such as ting if one were not driven by some demon whom one can neither resist or (sic) understand." ~ George Orwell

"Writing is the hardest way of earning a living, with the possible exception of wrestling alligators." ~ William Saroyan

  1. As much hard work as it is, I'd rather write a book than wrestle alligators :-)

Great quotes, reminding us that it really isn't supposed to be easy.

I've voted for The Harbinger, good luck!

  2. I voted for HARBENGER and shared the vote.

My favourite quote is the Stephan Fry one. After the fun of writing the first draft, the hard work that follows is like giving birth to an elephant.

Thanks for great quotes Christine. Good to know we're not suffering alone. :)

  12. It is a struggle! I don't want to imagine having a tooth pulled while making love though.

  14. Hi Christine, these are some great quotes! Dean Koontz's quote was my favorite listed, even though I've never read it either. He's my second favorite writer behind good ole Stevie King. :) Anyway, I'm now in the middle of revising my manuscript from November's NaNo, and yeah, it's not looking pretty right now. I've got my work cut out for me. Keep plugging away, and I will 'see' you again at next month's meeting. Happy Wednesday. Lily

  15. Thanks, girl. I needed to read this. I feel like I've been wrestling alligators, and it's pretty easy compared to this writing thing.

  18. My goodness, I know what you mean about those revisions! I thought the last set might kill me, but as it turns out, I'm still alive. It seriously took an entire month to get through 50 pages. Ug. Well, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger...
