Slow start to December

I haven't gotten back to my NaNo novel yet. It's been over a week. I haven't even thought about it. I've been trying to catch up on email and blogs, but I've been a little slow at that. Plus, I have some stories I need to critique. Not how I imagined starting off December.

The reason for this is I've had some health issues come up. Hopefully it can all be helped by a regular dose of medication, but I'm still waiting on the test results. I'll be back to see my doctor on Monday.

I need to do up a will. Has anyone out there done theirs? I'm curious if it would be better to do it with a lawyer or do it myself. I don't think anyone would disrespect my wishes if it wasn't witnessed and signed by a lawyer, but if something happened to both my husband and I, I want the guardianship for my son very clear.

  1. *hugs* I hope the test results won't be bad. I'll be thinking about you.

I think of wills every so often, but I haven't done one up yet. I think with a child, it might be better to go to a lawyer to make sure things are crystal clear. I keep pestering my parents to update theirs just in case something were to happen to them, since I want custody of my sister. Theirs is so old, she wasn't even in the will beyond the "any other children" mention.

  2. If you have kids, use a lawyer. Save yourself the trouble and time of doing it yourself and then finding out you need a lawyer to do it anyway. Worth the cost, though.

  3. Christine, praying for you!
Go see a lawyer. Don't mess around when it comes to your son's life.
And take care of yourself - don't mess around with your life, either!

  4. I do hope you get better soon, and the test results are nothing major. My thoughts are with you:)... I know nothing about wills... sorry.

  5. Thank you, everyone. Still no news update on my health.

I'm going to do up my own will and then go to a lawyer in the new year. My husband doesn't want to spend any more money than we have to during the holiday season. We've had to tighten our belts enough! I'm sure many of you know that feeling.

  6. I hope you get well soon. I would definitely use a lawyer for you will - serious, confusing, stuff.

It's hard being a multi-tasking writer - but it's the best way to develop the craft (and prepare for the world o' publishing :) )

  8. Hope you get well soon, Christine.

As for your will, I used an online "builder", but I don't have anything particularly important to sort out. Seeing as you need to make guardianship for your son completely clear, I'd be more inclined to use a lawyer, so there can be no room for error.

  10. I hate to hear someone mention health and wills in the same breath. Think positive thoughts about you health,I will think them for you also. It will help. Then take your meds. Hope it's not serious.

Never had a will. Still don't, BUT my kids are grown and I sold all my things to move to the islands. Listen to everyone else. Things are things, but who raises your son should be your choice. USE A LAYWER.

  11. I would hire a lawyer to make certain my wishes were carried out.

    As for NaNo - Congrats! ;}

Lots of projects for December will keep you in work mode - but it's a break after NaNo, right? Ha! But I sure did learn a lot about my word count goals....I can do so much more than I ever thought I could. Ha!

  12. Sorry you've been poorly. Hugs for a speedy recovery. I have heard it is better to have a will done by a lawyer because some are so full of loop holes they are made null and void and then all that effort would be for nought. For peace of mind I'd get the professional to do it. Good luck.

  13. Congrats on NaNoWriMo! You always do a great job! ^_^

I'm sorry to hear about your health issues. As we get older, those seem to creep up. Although, I've learned a lot in the last year in regards to health, and you'd be surprised about what's "normal" doesn't have to be.

But, since you're talking about your health AND a will, I would perhaps suggest reading up on Suze Orman's site. She has a will & trust kit, and she also talks about the important documents one should have (most importantly, a living revocable trust, and a power of attorney over health issues). You can start looking here: http://www.suzeorman.com/igsbase/igstemplate.cfm?SRC=MD002a&SRCN=catalogdetail&ProductID=20&StartRow=1&GnavID=10&SnavID=48&TnavID . I'm not saying you have to buy anything, but at least look around and get informed. I've learned from her show that a "will" is not necessarily all you need and isn't necessarily ironclad either, if there are other issues involved. Which, another issue that you might want to think about -- do you both have life insurance? You get can term life for cheap, to at least cover you until your son is grown. (Ah, the joys of being an adult.)

Good luck with everything! You'll be in my thoughts and prayers!! *hugs*

  14. Oh, sweetie, *hugs*. . . Best to have a lawyer help you with the minutiae of a will, though there are sites and inexpensive software to do it yourself. Still, you'll need to have it witnessed and notarized. Even if you think everyone will abide by your wishes, better to bind them. (Huh. Just had a mental image of handing them a gold ring with an Elfin inscription . . .)

  15. Thank you all. Still no word from the lab. Hopefully that means they didn't find anything. *knocks on wood* Thanks for the tips for a will too. I'll make an appointment with our lawyer in January.
