Friday Five for May 13, 2016

1. One short story rejection. One new flash piece written. I sent it in to my local critique group for this month's meeting.

2. Writing is still going slow. I should skip over the first chapter that's giving me trouble, but I keep digging in my heels. I only need one little idea to make it work. It hasn't come to me yet.

3. Two weeks left of school. I'm not ready yet! Next week, I'm a chaperone for my son's school zoo trip. His school does not allow chaperones to ride on the buses, so I'll have to drive to the zoo and meet them there. You would think the teachers would like to have the extra help on the bus during the hour ride there and back!

4. I was asked by one of the authors in my local group to participate in a panel for a class at the university. I agreed... and now I'm super anxious! I love to talk about writing, but I've never been good in front of an audience. As long as I don't faint and/or lose my voice, I think I'll be okay.

5. On the agenda for my weekend: a kid's birthday party and gardening. I need to get those seedlings in the ground before it rains again! Maybe we'll take our little guy to his first drive-in movie too. Everyone needs to experience the drive-in at least once. Have you ever been to a drive-in?

Have a terrific weekend!

  1. You'll do a great job at the university, Christine. Just enjoy it. The students will be in awe at meeting a published author. Do let us know how it goes!! And don't forget to 'plug your books!'

Have a great trip to the zoo and a splendid weekend.! Great post. Thank you.

  2. Hi Christine - what a great experience to have at the Uni - then taking your little one to a drive in ... I went in South Africa - can't say it's a good way to watch movies .. but fun nevertheless and he'll enjoy it. Good luck with the plantings ...

Enjoy the zoo .. both of you! Cheers Hilary

  3. You have to drive an hour to the zoo? That's not right.
You'll do great on that panel.
And we used to go to the drive in a lot when I was a kid. So few of them left now.

  4. I didn't even know there were in-door theaters until I was in high school :)

  5. Why wouldn't the chaperones ride on the bus? Isn't that sort of the point - to keep an eye on the kids?

You'll do great on the panel! Your enthusiasm will shine through any nerves.

I didn't know they even still had drive-in movies! I went a bunch of time as a kid with my parents, my aunts, etc. Fun!

  6. Interesting that the chaperones aren't allowed to ride on the bus. I really would have thought it would be the other way around--Isn't that why they ask for chaperones in the first place?

The panel opportunity sounds amazing. I'd faint dead if I were the one doing it, but I know you'll do a great job.

I used to love going to the Drive-in. There's still two of them a reasonable distance away from where I used to live. I have no idea if there are any here, though. Enjoy it!!

  7. I haven't been to a drive in for years . . . I think I would have to drive a ways to find one now.
Way to go on your writing and submissions! I'm struggling with my main WIP this week, too - I'm blaming it on the beautiful sunshine outside. :)
Have fun on that field trip! (I would think help on the bus ride would be good, too)
And wow - way to go with that panel - I'm sure you'll be great!

  8. I remember when drive-ins used those giant boxes and we always seemed to get the one whose wires were starting to sort.

    Panels are so much fun.

  9. Congrats on the panel. You'll do fine as long as you don't end up hiding under the table. ;)

  10. Chaperones can't ride on buses? They have to drive themselves? Is that normal? I'm sure it's some sort of weird liability thing for the school, but that sucks!

  13. Sorry writing's been so slow for you lately. Muses never fail to be stubborn at the worst possible times!

And wow, that's odd how they don't let chaperones ride the bus. Don't remember there being limitations like that when I was in school!

  14. I went to a drive in when I was very small, but I can barely remember it. And now, they're all closed in South Africa. :-(

  15. Lots of exciting things going on! The university visit, a birthday party and you get to visit the zoo with your son. Doesn't get much better than this.

  16. When our school took us on a field trip to the zoo (which is also an hour away) once upon a time ago, chaperones rode with us on the bus, because... well, like others have said, isn't that the whole point?

Good luck with your university panel! Talking about writing is always incredibly nerve-racking until you just get up there and do it. Then it's a blast.

  19. We're going to go to the drive-in Monday night to celebrate the last day of school! You'll do great on the panel. Is there a particular theme or topic for it, or just writing in general?
