IWSG for December 2014

The Insecure Writer's Support Group (IWSG) is the brilliant idea of Alex J. Cavanaugh. The purpose of the group is to share doubts and insecurities and to encourage one another. Please visit the other participants and share your support. A kind word goes a long way.

A big thank you to this month's wonderful co-hosts: Heather Gardner, Tonja Drecker, Eva E. Solar, and Patsy Collins.

In just over a month, the first book of my new geeky erotica series, Dice & Debauchery, will be released. I've got new release worries. I get them for every book I publish. But this time, it has the added level of different genre anxiety.

Will my urban fantasy and paranormal romance readers like my hilarious contemporary erotica? Will erotica readers like my stories which are quite different from the mainstream? Are the stories as funny as I think they are? What if no one gets the jokes?

I made the decision to publish D&D under the same name I use for all my works. I hope I made the right one in choosing to do so.

I'm attempting to take it easy this month as January will bring on a lot of promoting, but the worries are nibbling away at me. And I'm trying really hard not to nibble away that whole box of Christmas cookies!

Anyone else being nibbled or do you have the nibbles?

  1. Scary and cool both to take a risk in stretching your writing skills. I am sure this will be as big a success as the others; but I understand how stressful each publication can be.

Sending positive thoughts to you Christine.

  2. I'm still working on my first novel, but know I will be crazy when it's my turn to release. It's okay, enjoy the cookies, anything that will calm you. I know you will do great. Hang in there. Sending you plenty of virtual hugs.

  3. Oh, I'm releasing my first erotic romance novella soon, too. Only I'll be using a different name and not sharing that name openly. It's mostly to prevent my family reading them and thinking bad things. People tend to imagine the author either does or wants to do the things they write about regarding erotica, for some reason. Just the idea of the in-laws reading them makes my toes curl! Lol.

Best of luck you yummy brave girl. I'm sure it'll go awesomely. And I get your humour, so I'll download myself a copy. :)

  4. Not every reader likes everything - same as with music. But you gain readers and fans with every book you put out there. Enjoy the ride! :)

  5. I'm ready to nibble along with you!
A lot of writers are branching out in different genres, including erotica, and with success. You'll be fine.

  6. I totally hear you on the "will they get the joke? Is it as funny as I think it is?" part. I wonder that as well with my stuff. But you're an excellent writer, and I'm looking forward to your release. :)

  7. I think they'll get most of the jokes (a lot of geekdom has gone into pop culture), and true geeks will love them. D&D is a great series. :)

  8. I've never been into erotica, at all, but "geeky" erotica just got my attention. I can already see the humor in the mix. Good luck on the release!

  9. I'm sure everyone will love it. I'm working on a NA (I'm a YA writer) and know what you mean about all those worries! Those cookies sound like a great distraction! Cookies are my weakness

  10. I don't even have Christmas cookies yet. And the way my month's going, I'm in no danger of baking any. I'm relying on my friends this year.

If you have extras, I'll send you my snailmail. :-)

  13. I can't wait for your book to come out, Christine! This one may not be a few of your reader's cup of tea, but you'll definitely find new ones. And I bet many of them will enjoy your paranormal work as well. :)

  14. Since you're publishing under the same name, be sure to include a content warning with the story description for your erotica. Readers of your 'clean' books might impulse-buy, based on your rep., and get a shock.

Warnings won't protect you 100% from low reviews over the change in content, but they'll minimize it.

IWSG #151 until Alex culls the list again.

  15. I think your book will be great! I've enjoyed reading all your other ones.

Your nibble comment reminds me that I need to think about baking Christmas cookies. I seriously need more time!

  16. I think you made the right decision. It's not a great leap of genre, and I think you're series will do great. :)

I have nibbles about stories I submitted. I have such high hopes, yet am trying not to hope at all.
