Friday Five for January 31, 2014

1. I finished the 3rd draft of my WIP. Yay! Right on schedule with my goals for this year. It's been sent to my CPs and betas. Now I wait. Is anyone done reading yet?! Waiting is the hardest part. Best I get started on the revisions for my superhero WIP.

2. I sent my short story for the Untethered Realms anthology to be revised. Ahead of schedule. Though I didn't write it this month. I can't count it as one of the short stories for my goals this year. Novels come first this year, though. And querying. Yikes!

3. Oh! That reminds me: thank you to all of you who left tips on my Wednesday post about querying. Those were really helpful. I have a specific publisher in mind that I want to try first. If I have no luck there, I'll make a list and start sending queries out in small groups.

4. I have a parent-teacher conference this morning. Why do I feel so nervous? I know my son is smart, sweet, and well mannered. The other day my husband was playing Flow on his iPhone and the boy wanted to give it a try. He picked it up right away. A genius! Then later in the day he threw a fit to take down the bathroom because the ice cubes I gave him to play with in the tub were melting. Yup. I have to keep reminding myself he's just 3.

5. I'm doing all right for my goals this year. I get an A+ for revising, but only a D for managing to balance writing and networking. Yet I get a B+ for relaxing before bed and going to sleep at a reasonable hour. I've only had to have one nap this month. This is a huge improvement over last year when I wanted to nap five days of the week because I was so tired.

It's Friday! Woot! Have a wonderful weekend.

  1. Congrats on finishing the third draft of your WIP! That's such a great accomplishment! :D

Also, balance is so, so difficult to achieve, so don't get down on yourself for not having it perfected yet. I have a terrible time finding balance, too, and I'm nowhere near as busy as you!

  2. Congrats on finishing the third draft—that's awesome. And oh yeah, waiting is definitely the hardest part.

And, like Heather said, I have a hard time finding balance, too. And I'm definitely nowhere near as busy as you are either.

  4. yay friday!!

and great job with your goals - no Ds! you are doing great with the balancing if you are getting so much done! you're too hard on yourself!

my query advice - stick your tongue out at the rejections and move on. and once you send the queries, forget about them - don't fret about hearing back from them. wait about a month and then send another bunch. they don't always bother responding, unfortunately. but if you have an in with someone, esp an editor, you are already ahead of most!

not to mention, your writing is fantastic! what's not to love!

    happy friday!

  5. You need to give him bigger ice cubes!
That's cool Untethered Realms is putting together a book.

  6. I continue to be impressed. And I agree with Alex - what's up with you being stingy with the ice cubes?

  8. Geniuses can be so much fun to raise! My boys were smarter than me by the time they hit puberty.

I think balancing networking and writing is the hardest thing. Seems like if I'm doing well in one area, I'm stinking up another!

  10. I'm sure your conference will be great. Sometimes I worry about my boy, too, but he seems to be doing well. Good for you on the 3rd revision! Hope you continue to meet your goals.

  11. I always looked forward to those parent-teacher conferences as a parent. Nothing like someone else liking your kids to make your day.
As a high school teacher, the only parent conferences I had were about problems. Not fun.

  12. Balance is hard to find and harder to maintain. You seem to be doing a pretty good job so far.

  13. Maybe I should freeze a bowl of water and see if that satisfies him! Thanks for popping by, everyone. Have a great Friday! :)
