IWSG for November 2013, Interview, & Realms Faire reminder

The Insecure Writer's Support Group (IWSG) is the brilliant idea of Alex J. Cavanaugh. The purpose of the group is to share doubts and insecurities and to encourage one another. Please visit the other participants and share your support. A kind word goes a long way.

Take a nap.

That's right. Get comfy, curl up under your favorite blanket, and snore.

Sleeping will help your insecurities. It will chase away your blues, increase your mind power, and boost your metabolism. We function better on all levels when we have enough sleep.

Plus, dreams are terrific inspiration for stories. That's where most of my story ideas originate.

Researchers at Harvard University have found that sleep does increase your creativity. (Make sure to use this article as proof when your family wonders why you need to snooze more often.)

As writers, sometimes we get up extra early in the mornings or stay up late to find the time to write. While that gives us our quiet time, it takes away from our sleep time. Lack of sleep will eventually catch up to you, and the price will be steep.

So take a nap.

You'll be less stressed, have more energy, and find your muse equally refreshed.

  1. This is a great tip! Unfortunately, when I'm feeling insecure,it keeps me awake lol!

  2. Lol! I'm going to show this to my hubs. He's one of those 6 hour a night sleepers and complains that I insist on having 8-9 every night. ;)

  3. A nap. All these years I have felt guilty and not I see its good for my career. Wonderful news!

Thanks so much for the interview. it was fun!

  4. It's really funny you suggest a nap on the very day I decide not to sleep because I have way too much to do. If I have to write (on my WIP) I need 7-8 hours of sleep. But if it's all admin-type stuff, I can get 5 or so...or none.

Good luck with NaNo (if you're doing it). :-)

  5. Can so relate to not getting enough sleep trying to squeeze this all in. Lately I've been so tired that I've had to sleep more and it feels good. Thanks for reminding us to rest.

  6. I'm going to curl up and sleep in my cubicle right now!

  7. I love this tip! Hmm... Both my kids are at school right now. Maybe I should take advantage of the quiet. :)

  8. I am not normally a napper. But I may be today because I was up before the sun.

  9. Yes! Ideas do come in dreams, and early mornings, late evenings are when I prefer to dabble with writing....I say dabble because I am working on just another short story...I did one as a blog hop, but it gave me the confidence to try another to get the feet wet! I love my rest, and especially so since the time change! Sandy of sandysanderellasmusings.blogspot

  10. Yes! Naptime! If I'm sitting still and writing, I'm more prone to taking a nap than if I'm out somewhere and active.

  11. YES, take naps! I take a short rest every afternoon, and it helps keep me fueled way into the night.

  12. I've been unable to sleep this past week - things on my mind - and I feel utterly bleh! Steep indeed. I WILL sleep tonight because I'm taking two (herbal, I'm a rebel) sleeping tablets. I'll be zonked till morning, and will be literally flying on form tomorrow! :) X

  13. Yes, my muse could use refreshing!

    Naps?

Does it count when I find myself with my hands on the keyboard but completely asleep?

  14. I could go for a nap right now, although they frown upon that at work. LOL!

  15. I opened up your post and three others last night and was just too tired to read it until to know. Just before I went to sleep I said to hubby something like, I was so unproductive today because I didn't get enough sleep last night . . . wish I had read this earlier. It really speaks to me :)

  16. Several of my ideas have come from dreams too. In fact since I'm kind of stuck with my WIP I keep wishing I could have dream to inspire me! Maybe if I take your advice it will work. :D

  17. Thanks so much, everyone! I'm having a great visit with my mom, and my boy is getting spoiled. But that means he doesn't want to nap. I really want a nap right now myself.

  18. Sleeping never seems to help my insecurities, since my dreams often make me feel more worthless than I already do. *shifty eyes* I do agree that it's easier to function with sleep, though--it's too easy to be a zombie otherwise!

  19. All I do is toss and turn. And then I realize that phrase is a cliche and that makes me even more insecure. I'm never going to get that ms. written right.

  20. That is great advice. I ignored it for a few years but I feel so much better now that I try to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

  21. I'm getting up later and later in the morning, even though my alarm is going off at the same time I'm becoming expert at turning it off in my sleep :-( At least I have a reason!

  22. Sleep sounds good. Can I quote your blog when I decide to take your advice at work? ;)

    Great IWSG post!

  23. Oh, if only my insomnia would listen to you. But yes, I do stay up late writing. Sometimes I'm overtired. But dreams are an awesome inspiration. I've written a few short stories from my dreams. :D
