Friday Five for June 21, 2013

1. Check out YA fantasy author Graeme Ing's blog later this evening for an interview with me. He's featuring each of the Untethered Realms authors over the next few months. Don't miss out on all the news and teasers about our upcoming books.

2. Some of you know that I'm a vivid dreamer. I remember at least one dream every night. Much of my inspiration comes from them. This week, I had one of my dreams analyzed on Sculpted Dreams. I'm case #4. There's a monster, an immortal, and a great discovery. Stop on by and let me know what you think it means!

3. I'm so close to finishing THE GHOST. All my best lines have been coming near the end. I'm so happy with the way it's going. I only have one major worry: is it good enough to end the series? I'll talk more about this in July IWSG post. The end of the series. I'm a little stunned about that!

4. It's been a long week. Lots going on outside the house. My little guy has a huge poison ivy rash. Poor boy. It just keeps spreading. He scratches at it in his sleep. Do you have any secrets how to help with a poison ivy rash? We've got Cortizone to take away the itch, but I don't know how well that's working.

5. My local writer's group meets tomorrow. They really liked my story last month, and I submitted it to Daily Science Fiction. I was short-listed, but this week, I got the standard rejection email. I bought some ice cream, drowned my sorrows in creamy delight, and submitted the story to another press. We've just got to keep trying.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Will have to remember to check out Graeme Ing's blog later!

And wow, cool dream! It honestly felt like I was reading a story. Too bad your alarm had to go off when it did!

Also, congrats on being almost done with The Ghost--that's awesome! So crazy to realize this will be the end. Looking forward to it, though, since this has been such a fantastic series so far!

  2. I know the feeling about that last book in a series. Will it be the proper sendoff? (I bet yours will be though!)

  3. It's great that you dreams like that! I hardly ever remember mine.

Congrats on being nearly done with your book!

I hope your little boy feels better soon. It's so hard to see them feeling so bad...

    Have a nice weekend. ☺

  4. I often have very vivid story-like dreams, too.

Calamine (not sure if I spelled it right...)lotion helps sometimes.

  5. I have no doubt you're doing everything right. Don't let the 'R's bother you. They don't know what they are missing.

    I do.

    I'm missing the last book!!!

Sorry about the poison ivy. My mother used to talk about oatmeal baths or something to take away the itch and dry up the spots.

    Have a great weekend!

  6. Aww! Sorry to hear about the rejection, but hopefully you'll hear good news with the next publisher!

Like Heather, have you tried oatmeal baths? I know it works well with chicken pox itches, so it might work with poison ivy.

  7. Pesky rejection letters are always getting in the way aren't they?

Have you tried an oatmeal bath?

  8. Sorry to hear of your son's poison ivy. I had it bad a few years ago and wound up having to get on steroids to get rid of it. Luckily, though, mine never seemed to itch, so I was fortunate in that respect.

Have you tried Gold Bond powder or cream? It's supposed to be great for that sort of thing.

  9. So sorry to hear about the poison ivy. I was a poison ivy magnet when I was a kid so I really feel for the little guy!

I've no doubt Ghost will be a great and fitting ending to the 13th Floor series. I read The Oracle & Vampire while I was on vacation and just loved it, this whole series is fantastic and I'm sure Ghost will be the same.

I'm totally fascinated by dreams so I'm off to read your analysis now. :)

  10. The short list is almost worse than a normal rejection because it's an "almost made it." I had a play shortlisted for a festival in the UK, and I'm like, "Why did you even tell me?" I mean, I know they mean to show me how much they liked it, but if the end result is the same (rejection), it just kills to know how close you came.

And thanks for linking to the dream site!

  11. Thank you, everyone. I got a lot of advice about how to treat the rash on FB too. Have a wonderful weekend, folks!

  12. Socks on the hands at night? Callomine, yes. It's going to take an ocean of callomine loton...

I had a weird dream. The first thing out of my mouth this morning was, "WTF? Summoning the borg is just moronic. That gigantic back hoe isn't going to help." Husband Unit didn't respond...

Yay on almost done with ghost. Have a great weekend!

  13. Sorry to hear about your son. Mother Dragon used to put calendula powder to help the itch.
Dreams, I am good in making up meanings for dreams but as interesting as they may sound, my explanations are not reliable.
You keep trying with that story, send it as many times as necessary. We'll keep cheering for you.

  15. 1. Loved your interview, really interesting. Especially intrigued by the witch story.

    2. Brilliant dream analysis; I found the interpretation fascinating.

    3. YAY! I cannot wait, though I'm sad the series will soon be over. I'm sure you'll end it in spectacular fashion though.

    4. Oh no, poor little guy. :( I hope he's okay and the itching goes away soon.

    5. Have fun at your writer's group. Sorry your story didn't get accepted by Daily Science Fiction. , but it sounds like you took the rejection well. Good luck when you submit it elsewhere.

    Have a fab weekend! :D

  17. Oh bummer about the poison ivy and the rejection - but way to go on re-submitting!!!

Just keep writing, keep publishing, and keep submitting! Your writing rocks!!!

Congrats on coming to the end of your series!

  18. Poison ivy... that's rough. Sending good wishes that he gets better soon.

Can't believe it's the end of the series, but I'm certain that The Ghost will make for a worthy finale. :)

  19. We don't really have poison ivy in the UK, but for a rash I'd take a antihistamine pill and smooth on Witch Hazel or Chamomile.
