Teaser Tuesday with Uglies

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
I've heard a lot of good things about this book, Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. A YA dystopian where everyone can have an operation when they turn sixteen to be beautiful. Some anti-social people decide not to have it and are banished into the wild. Interesting premise, but I haven't been able to get into it so far. Hopefully that will change as I keep reading.
Here's your teaser:
A shadow passed over her, blacking out the sky. Then her hand struck something - a familiar grippy surface.... (page 176)

there's like 2 other books in this series -- i had not interest in reading them, i'd be curious to know if you pick them up after you finish this one!

  5. Sorry you haven't been able to get into it.

I like the teaser, but I'm put off by the word "grippy". Think I'm being picky, but what the heck is a "grippy" surface? Couldn't an actual adjective have been used to give the reader an idea of what it felt like?

  6. Trish, I'm not going to pick up the other two. I'm forcing myself to finish the book, but I'm more skimming it now than actually reading it.

C D, that word bothered me too. You'd think the editor could have suggested a better word choice.

  7. Yeah, the "grippy surface" is weird. My sister did like the Uglies series. She read them a few years ago. I haven't read them yet, though.

  8. Ah, this reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode, which is a good thing. After reaching a certain age every girl had her soul transfered into the perfect model. They all looked the same. :)

  9. I really liked the Uglies series, although it lost me after Specials. I didn't read the fourth book.

And thanks for stopping by my TT for Discord's Apple. Per your comment, I included a link to my review of the book in the comments.

  10. Oddly enough, while I didn't particularly like Uglies, I loved the last book in the series, Specials.

    Great teaser!
