This month's awesome co-hosts are: Patricia Lynne, Lisa Buie-Collard, Kim Lajevardi, and Fundy Blue!
This month's optional question: What are your favorite and least favorite questions people ask you about your writing?
Favorite: What is your book about?
Least favorite: It must be wonderful being a writer and working from home. What do you do with all your free time?
Free time?! What free time? There aren't enough hours in a day to do everything I need to do for my writing career.
It frustrates me even more when people believe that being a writer is just a hobby and not a serious career. They think I'm a stay-at-home mom who spends too much time on the computer.
I hope this year I can create a schedule that will help with my time issues. Writing must come first. I have cut back on blogging some, but I don't want to give it up fully. I enjoy the community way too much. You guys are awesome!
I can't wait to read what questions you guys have faced as authors. I won't be able to get around to everybody until next week, though. My son is still on break until Monday.
Happy New Year!
I wish I could be a serious writer that only needs a couple hours a day to create a masterpiece, lol. As it is, I think I'm a "hobby" writer. Its just fun for me.
ReplyDeleteMost writers work at it as much as I work at a day job. Writing is the easy part - when you have the time. The publication process is brutal.
Good luck this year Christine.

It seems like many people don't see full-time writing as a valid career and assume it's a hobby. Such a shame that they don't get how hard people like you work. Hope you're enjoying the winter break with your son.
ReplyDeleteFor many years, I often felt as if I had to defend my writing time, explaining over and over that I was really working. It was exhausting!
ReplyDeleteFree time? Isn't that used for sleeping?
ReplyDelete#snort Free time? Yeah, that's a stickler question.
ReplyDeleteHaving lots of free time? Ha! Ha! Enjoy your last week of your son's winter break. Glad you're just cutting back and not leaving blogging.
ReplyDeleteYour favorite question is actually my least favorite question right now, but that's usually because it's coming from someone I just don't feel comfortable telling.
ReplyDeleteFree time, ha! That's one I forgot to mention. Must be nice to create your own schedule. No, it's not. It's really not. It takes a ton of discipline.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah... Writing is easy, it doesn't take time, and it isn't work - for which you get paid hardly anything. I need to create sometime of schedule for myself too. This is the first IWSG Wednesday in a long where I'm actually going around visiting.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy time with your son. I find it frustrating when I can't explain how having kids can take so much time away from everything. There's no real easy answer. But it happens. Continuously.
ReplyDeleteI don't have kids and I don't have much free time. I hate it how non-writers assume that if you don't have a day job (for whatever reason) that you have loads of free time and aren't busy.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are able to get your schedule worked out this year so you can have more time for writing. And that people can learn to just shut up about "free time." I don't understand why some people have to be so snarky!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and your family, Christine!
Until I finish at least one book, I'll have to consider myself nothing but a hobbyist. I hope to change that status this year, however. You have way too many stories out to be considered a hobbyist.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm one of the few who finds myself with a little too much free time most days. When I'm actually busy, though, I feel like I'm losing my mind. Regardless of how much free time I have, I hate it when people assume that when I'm not at work, I'm just sitting at the computer twiddling my thumbs. So rude. :)
ReplyDelete"Free time" made me lol. I'm with your sister. :-)

What is free time? I'm either working on something or wishing the stupid fatigue would go away so I could get to work.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the time with your son. They grow up so fast. I freeze sometimes when people ask me what my book is about even though I prepare for that question.
ReplyDeleteI've faced this misconception a lot. Free time? What's that? I think I've heard of such a concept, but I'm not sure what it is. Balancing my kids and writing and everything else life throws at me is tough.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Christine! Wow, he gets a long break.
ReplyDeleteAnd it is so annoying that some people think of writing as more of a hobby. Even when we're not making much money off it, it's hard work and shouldn't be treated so frivolously.
Hahaha. I love that free time question. Or when people say that I don't work. I find I have very little free time, and I don't even have children.
ReplyDeleteI'm always in awe of what you accomplish every year.
Hmmm - since I left the workforce last April to write full time, I've gotten that "what do you do with your free time" Q, as well. Free time? Pffft. Also, I do not need them to point out that James Patterson has published 5 books in that same time period, as if my progress is in any way related to his output (or any other prolific author).
ReplyDeleteFREE TIME!? What on earth is that?
ReplyDeleteActually, for me, answering the question "What is your book about?" is hard. It probably tells me something negative about my books. Maybe I don't focus enough?
ReplyDeleteHappy IWSG. Hope you have a joyful and happy year. Happy Writings too.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing at your opening paragraphs because they are so true. People don't think of writing as a job. They look at you like you're crazy when you say you don't have any free time. I had to learn to say No thanks, I'm busy and I use one of the names of my characters to indicate I have an appointment with him or her and they leave me alone. I call it being creative.
Wishing you a great 2019 and much success.
Shalom aleichem,
Pat G @ EverythingMustChange
Yes, the patronizing is annoying: "Oh, you're a writer? How fun!" like they're talking to a three-year-old. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteI'm still laughing about the "free time" question. How can you keep a straight face when that question pops up? Here's to finding time to do that writing and still grab some Zs in 2019.
ReplyDelete"What do you do with all your free time?" Ooooo, cringy question. It is that people just don't think before the open their mouths?
ReplyDeleteFree time? What's that??? I give you points for not decking them. Some people don't filter their words. Best wishes for a productive 2019.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya!! People don't have a clue how much time it takes. Just thinking of all the things I should be doing or should be doing better makes me feel exhausted.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck creating a writing schedule this year! Hope it leads to lots of productivity for you!
ReplyDeleteAnd oh, gosh, so with you on that "free time" thing. I come across too many people who don't realize what I do is a job, and that it eats up hours upon hours of my day. Free time simply doesn't exist. Your writing definitely isn't just a hobby, and I'm sorry so many people act like it is for you. :/
Yeah, people always ask me about the next sequel, but the publisher decides whether there will be one, not me. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteThank you to everyone for stopping by. I'll be doing my best to get to your blogs this week! :) Have a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteFree time?? Haha! Who has that? I wish I could spread my time a little more evenly between my two careers...maybe someday!
ReplyDeleteFree time??? That really made me laugh! Non-writers do not understand how much time is involved in writing. Add being a mother, and you have way more than two "jobs." I consider blogging a genre of writing, and I enjoy the online community. Were it not for that community, I would have likely given up writing. Wishing you all the best as you find a workable schedule.
ReplyDeleteIt bothers me, too, when people think I don't really work. Writing is the hardest job I've ever done. Also the most rewarding. Even with zero free time. I love it.
ReplyDeleteOh, the "hobby" question kills me! It's not a hobby. It's work. LOL.
ReplyDeleteFree time?! What?! That's pretty close to my mom's question: are you sure you're busy? I mean, I know you're writing, but you can't do that all day? (True, but I do have grad school, teaching prep, house-cleaning - yuck, but it has to be done, errand running and other stuff. I rarely just sit around and do nothing.) Agh.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope we don't get asked that question very often or at all in 2019.
I remember a 12 hour day recently. Writing/re-writing. I looked at my husband whom I'd barely spoken too all day and said. Writing is hard work! Damn hard work!
ReplyDeleteMy husband proposed me becoming a full-time writer before and I have to shake my head. I wouldn't get any writing done if I was at home because there is soooooo much to do. But you're amazing because you do so much of it. Kudos to you!
